With a deft tap of his gavel President Michael opened the final February meeting of the Petaluma Rotary Club.

image

Chris Ranney led us in the Pledge of Allegiance (did you know that this is the fifth version of the 1892 Pledge of Allegiance?  Click to learn more.)

image

Brandon Trammell led a spirited version of the Club Song.

image

Mireille Broussard chose the National Anthem for our patriotic song and — while it wasn’t exactly a beautiful rendition — we did finish the first verse.

image

President Elect Nominee Anne Gealta gave her Thought for the Day which gave new meaning to walking a mile in someone else’s shoes.

image

Charlie Stuart introduced visiting Rotarians from Petaluma Valley (Jim Hurley) and Hilo, Hawaii (our own Jim Becker).  Three Rotarians introduced guests: Chad Fillinger, his daughter; Royce Van Bebber, his two sons, and Onita Pellegrini introduced Michael Avery from the local Merrill Lynch office.

February might be the shortest month but it has lots of birthdays: Lee Reposa, Kathy O’Connor, Roy Musick, Raine Howe, Al Cattalini, Wally Bragdon, Chris Elzi, Brian Breen and Whit Hall.  We sang Happy Birthday to the honorees and enjoyed birthday cake baked by President Michael and frosted by Secretary Gail.  We also noted the 39th anniversary of Charlie and April Stuart and the 37th of Joanne and Mike Ferris.

Chris Ranney reported on the recent Crab Feed (550 attendees, 14,000 net proceeds for the Club) and thanked the many members (and others) who contributed to its success.  Your editor can’t write fast enough so you’ll be denied as listing of the dozens and dozens of names.  Thanks to all!  And a special thanks to co-chair Michael Caruana who was out of town today.

image

President Michael recognized all the good work by presenting Chris with the Rotarian of the Month Award.  Well deserved, Chris!

Rick Gorman reported on another successful year for the Super Raffle which he co-chaired with Brian Breen, Elias Husary, and Lee Reposa.  Thanks to hard work by team captains and individual ticket sellers we sold 1,611 tickets and netted some $32,000 for Club projects.  Special recognition to members of the 60+ Club who sold 60 or more tickets: Elias Husary (62), Kip Herzog (81), Rick Gorman (83), Royce Van Bebber (93), Sheri Ranney (95) and Tom Baker (198).  Team standings: Third Place, Tom Baker (198); Second Place, Royce Van Bebber (229); First Place, Chris Ranney, (298).

All this good work did not go unnoticed and unrecognized.  Rick was also named Rotarian of the Month!

Workers are needed this weekend for the Salvation Army kitchen renovation project (Saturday 8-4, Sunday 1-4).  Drywall skills are particularly appreciated, but everyone can help, there’s lots to do.  Contact Greg O’Brien for more information.

We also are looking for volunteers to serve as panelist for the SRJC Puente career mentorship program (Thursday, March 7, 6:30-8:00pm; Saturday, April 6, 10:00am-noon.) Check with President Michael for more information.

Next week’s meeting will start 15 minutes early (at 12:15pm) to provide for attendance at the kickoff meeting for a cooperative effort to support ending domestic violence in Sonoma County.  Our Club is partnering with PPSC and the YWCA in this important project.

If you are not totally volunteered out by now, you can help plant 3,000 trees on Saturday, March 23 in Middletown.  This is Part Deux of the Rotary Reforestation project.

Mark your calendar for the District 5130 Training Assembly, Saturday, April 6 at the Finley Center in Santa Rosa.

And while you have your calendar out, mark Friday, March 8 (5pm) for a Rotary After Hours Social at La Dolce Vita wine lounge, 151 Petaluma Blvd., South.

Stewardship time: Gail Cardaropoli was delighted to contribute $100 to celebrate her trip to Guatemala exploring Rotary service opportunities and her grandson who is in Phoenix participating in spring training with the Milwaukee Brewers.

image

This photo of Brandon Trammell dancing with his daughter cost him $60.

image

Steve Powell was so appreciative of Sherry Burwen’s work to provide an elaborate dining experience for 50 crab eaters that he contributed $100 toward her next Paul Harris award.

image

Elias Husary suggested that Chad Fillinger should make an announcement.

image

And what an announcement it was!  Chad is the proud father of a new son born last week.  Brian Breen toasted the birth with a $50 contribution.  What ever happened to cigars?

image

Onita Pellegrini won the raffle and a nice bottle of wine.

image

Suzanne Tucker introduced our speaker.

image

Petaluma Police Chief Ken Savano gave an interesting presentation on policing and on our local police situation.

Don’t forget — our next meeting starts 15 minutes early!
