With
visiting former Rotary Exchange student Maurus Pajarola serving as
Co-President, President
Michael called the meeting to order.

Grace Nistler led the
Pledge of Allegiance.

Maurus
assisted President
Michael in singing our Club Song, I’m a Rambler, . . . .
(If you are curious about the origins of our official song — and the
correct lyrics — click here for the August 23, 2007
Rota-Teller. Use the password agnew
if asked.)

Ed Fullerton, ably
assisted by his wife Carol,
led the singing of America
the Beautiful.

Michael Caruana gave the
Thought for the Day, discussing the damage to Notre Dame Cathedral and
likening the import and resilience of the structure to friendships that
endure over time.

Sherry Burwen introduced
four visiting Rotarians, three from the Petaluma Sunrise Club and one
from the Tiburon Club.

One
of the visitors, Dave Adams, from the Sunrise Club, thanked our members
for their assistance in renovating the Salvation Army facility on South
McDowell Blvd. The project, which will serve homeless youths, is now
complete.
We
had lots of guests today. Maggie
Radany brought Jave, who is interested in learning
about our Club. Grace
Nistler brought her granddaughter, Mia. Michael Caruana
introduced four guests including his wife Diane and our guest speaker. Royce Van Bebber
introduced his son, Cole. And Onita
Pellegrini introduced about-to-be-member Michael Avery
and his wife, Hayley.

Sunshine Report. Ed Fullerton reported
that Mike
Ambrosio had his first treatment and is doing well.

President Michael discussed
the Miracle League field dedication this past Sunday with photos and
videos.

Chris Ranney received a
standing ovation from the members for his leadership on the
construction of the Rotary Pavilion at the ballfield. Chris thanked
all the volunteers and noted that with the first game coming up on May
4, we need more volunteers. We need 3 or 4 “buddies” and help with the
BBQ.
Chris had a special thank you to Royce Van Bebber
for all his assistance with steel for the project.
President Elect Elias Husary
missed today’s meeting but sent Chris
a thank you letter enumerating what Chris had accomplished.

Sveinn Sigurdsson gave a
fascinating craft talk describing how working on a fishing boat in his
native Iceland brought him to college in Appleton, Wisconsin, to
medical anthropology in Arizona and Guatemala, to Chicago where he
studied medical administration and met (and married) a girl from
Petaluma, to a fellowship at Yale, and then to Stanford, and finally to
the Petaluma Health Center. Quite a trip, Sveinn, and
we’re glad you ended up here!

On
May 2, two weeks from today, our Thursday meeting will be held at Coast
Guard Training Center Petaluma (Two Rock). The program begins with an
11:00 a.m. social hour at The Anchorage. This is a different location
than past years; it’s the first building on your right
after passing through the security check. Turn right and park
immediately after passing the electronic message board. Lunch is at
noon at the Halley Hall dining facility (same location as in the past).
To
enter the base your name must be on a list that the Club will furnish
to the Coast Guard before the luncheon and you’ll have to produce a
photo ID bearing a name that’s on the list. New security procedures
require that the list include your birthdate along with your name.
So, if you are planning to attend May 2 luncheon and have not already
put your name and birthdate on the list, send an email to Al Cattalini with this
information.
To
bring your vehicle onto the base you may be required to produce your driver license, vehicle
registration, and proof of insurance. Nothing new here!

Onita Pellegrini inducted our
newest member, Michael
Avery. Michael
is employed by Merill Lynch; hisRotary classification
is Financial/Retirement Planning.

Michael’s wife Hayley pinned on his
Rotary badge.

Be
alert for word of a possible early start for next week’s meeting.
You’ll receive an email alert if this comes to pass. You won’t want to
be late; the program is “CannaCraft: Cannabis Cultivation and
Production.” (If you arrive late you might be mistaken for a customer.)

Other Upcoming Meetings: May 2 at the
Coast Guard, May 9 – Rotary Youth Exchange student Mizuki Takeuchi, May
16 – DARK for the 4-Way Fest in Reno.
Look
for word soon on a Friendship Feast on May 3 or 4.

Our
lucky raffle winner was Cole Van Bebber who collected $200 and a stick
of red licorice.

Michael Caruana introduced
our guest speaker, a former Detroit elementary school classmate of his.

Robert
Hendry, a retired Group Vice President of General Motors gave an
interesting presentation, "Perspectives — Automotive Cultures and
Human Nature." If you missed
seeing his Saab Story — or want to see it again — click here.
