President Michael Nistler called to order his 42nd weekly meeting amidst a background of beautiful weather and an earlier than usual start time (11:30 am). The crowd of 25 Rotarians was small, but Nistler rallied the troops and tweeted that it was "the largest crowd ever - you should've seen it!"

image

John Zimmerman and John Dado ('The Johns') were debating "who has more hair?" as they both pointed to themselves as the winner! Just Kidding! John Zimmerman led the Pledge of Allegiance as John Dado sang back-up vocals!

image

Michael Caruana was chosen to lead the club song, which the Prez reminded us of the many mistakes he's been making with the lyrics and fined himself $25 bucks. If another president that we all know fined himself $25 bucks for every time he made a false statement our country would be out of debt! Don McKinney, shown in the background, was visiting and sang along with Caruana and the rest of us Rotarians. Jim Roeters and President Elect Daniel Powers from Sunrise Rotary Club of Petaluma were also visitors at our meeting. Mike Stewart was another visitor who joined us - keep the visitors coming!

image

Mireille Broussard softly belted out the lyrics for God Bless America (she said she was sleepy today - the guy in the background was texting her to sing louder and with more conviction! Maybe next time Mireille, maybe next time)... However, you did quite well as the Mic Walker (no running today due to being sleep deprived). Blame it on the Cannabis speaker - most of us seemed to be in a very relaxed state this week!!!

image

Ed Fullerton was one of the Mic Runners (I think he forgot to pass the Mic and just started speaking about something that I completely forgot what the subject matter was!). Dare I say that he "Bogarted" the Mic! Cannabis strikes again...

image

Royce Van Bebber mentioned that there is still work to be done at the Miracle Field (please contact Royce if you'd like to volunteer to help complete this incredible project).

Anne Gealta gave an update regarding Mike Ambrosio and mentioned that she had lunch with him recently and he's doing well and his spirits are good! Anne also mentioned that it would be helpful to visit him and get him out of his house, which will help with his recovery.

We miss you Mike and wish you a speedy recovery!

President Nistler announced that former Rotorian and local furniture magnate Paul Zell passed away at age 91. Nistler pointed out that Mr. Zell's stamp is on the bottom of the wooden fine collection can. I remember playing baseball for Petaluma National Little League in the 70's and Paul Zell sponsored a team for many years. His furniture also appeared in many TV shows. Thanks for the great memories Paul, you will be missed!

The Prez also announced that the Friendship Exchange Potluck Dinner will be held on Sunday, May 5 (Cinco De Mayo) from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Jerry Besse and Jerri Patterson's home located at 124 Sunny Hill Drive in Petaluma. This will be a Tri-Club event and they're expecting 30-50 people to attend.

image

Steve Powell gave an update on the Telemedicine program and the upcoming fundraiser at Ketcham Winery in Healdsburg. The cost is $75 per person and Steve has offered to cover the cost if you'd like to attend. However, if you sign up to attend and then don't show you'll have to fork over $75 bucks - sounds like a deal to me! Please contact Steve for details and if you're interested in attending.

Charlie Stuart introduced this week's guest speaker, Joanna Cedar from Cannacraft. Joanna educated us regarding Cannabis and the business that is driving this thriving industry. Cannacraft is located in Santa Rosa in a 50,000 square foot facility and they manufacture Cannabis products such as CBD based products (www.projectcbd.org), edibles, lifestyle products, and a joint venture (no pun intended) with Lagunitas Brewing Company (Hi-Fi Hops). Royce Van Bebber was curious if Joanna's company provided the brownies for dessert???

COAST GUARD LUNCHEON

Our May 2 meeting will be held at Coast Guard Training Center Petaluma (Two Rock). The program begins with an 11:00 a.m. social hour at The Anchorage. This is a different location than past years; it’s the first building on your right after passing through the security check. Turn right and park immediately after passing the electronic message board. Lunch is at noon at the Halley Hall dining facility (same location as in the past).

Because of new security procedures, admission to the base is limited to members and guests who have previously placed their name on the attendance list. Be prepared to produce your photo ID when you arrive. Members not on the list will be denied entry.

When bringing your vehicle onto the base be prepared to produce your driver license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance.

One of the visitors, Dave Adams, from the Sunrise Club, thanked our members for their assistance in renovating the Salvation Army facility on South McDowell Blvd. The project, which will serve homeless youths, is now complete.

Chris Ranney received a standing ovation from the members for his leadership on the construction of the Rotary Pavilion at the ballfield. Chris thanked all the volunteers and noted that with the first game coming up on May 4, we need more volunteers. We need 3 or 4 “buddies” and help with the BBQ.

Chris had a special thank you to Royce Van Bebber for all his assistance with steel for the project.

President Elect Elias Husary missed today’s meeting but sent Chris a thank you letter enumerating what Chris had accomplished.

image

Sveinn Sigurdsson gave a fascinating craft talk describing how working on a fishing boat in his native Iceland brought him to college in Appleton, Wisconsin, to medical anthropology in Arizona and Guatemala, to Chicago where he studied medical administration and met (and married) a girl from Petaluma, to a fellowship at Yale, and then to Stanford, and finally to the Petaluma Health Center. Quite a trip, Sveinn, and we’re glad you ended up here!

On May 2, two weeks from today, our Thursday meeting will be held at Coast Guard Training Center Petaluma (Two Rock). The program begins with an 11:00 a.m. social hour at The Anchorage. This is a different location than past years; it’s the first building on your right after passing through the security check. Turn right and park immediately after passing the electronic message board. Lunch is at noon at the Halley Hall dining facility (same location as in the past).

To enter the base your name must be on a list that the Club will furnish to the Coast Guard before the luncheon and you’ll have to produce a photo ID bearing a name that’s on the list. New security procedures require that the list include your birthdate along with your name. So, if you are planning to attend May 2 luncheon and have not already put your name and birthdate on the list, send an email to Al Cattalini with this information.

To bring your vehicle onto the base you may be required to produce your driver license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance. Nothing new here!
