August 18 - Jim Symons & Jim Becker: Our Experience in Korea at the Rotary Conference and visiting the DMZ!
PRESIDENT LEE opened his second meeting with a tap of the bat (still no gavel!) and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Continuing his tradition (of one week) of having the previous week’s songleader select the current songleader, he asked JAY PALM for his selection.
JAY selected a visiting Rotarian from the Greely (Colorado) Centennial Club for the honor. Fortunately the selectee was a former songleader (and Past President) of our Club, Lou Steinberg. Lou did his usual great job with I’m a Rambler
and God Bless America.
RICK GORMAN was up next with his Thought for the Day, three quotes about service.
After the traditional hugs and handshakes (made a bit stickier by those flimsy paper napkins), JUDI ALLEWELT introduced our one visiting Rotarian, the aforementioned Lou Steinberg.
DAN FISH introduced his guest, Juliette from the Boys and Girls Club and RICK GORMAN introduced his son, Ben.
Treasurer TAWNY TESCONI reminded members that dues are past due and requested prompt payment.
Secretary GAIL CARDAROPOLI reminded members that today (by 5pm) was the last chance to sign up for the July 28 SCARC dinner. If you are reading this, it’s already too late.
JIM BECKER noted the special relationship our Club has with the sponsoring Sebastopol Sunrise Club and urged good representation from our Club.
PRESIDENT LEE discussed the Miracle League project. After a meeting with President Elect CHRIS RANNEY he decided to move forward with the project. They are hoping to break ground this year with CHRIS heading the implementation committee. Contact CHRIS to join up!
CHRIS reported that the next meeting would take place at the proposed Luchessi Park location.
After its being missing for months, JAY PALM’s chicken badge was found. PRESIDENT LEE invited JAY to the podium to collect the badge and generously announced there would be no fine imposed.
PRESIDENT LEE imposed a fine of sorts on visiting Lou Steinberg, but paid the $20 tab himself (to Rotary International), thanking Lou for introducing him to Rotary.
Lou wasn’t done with his Petaluma duties. He was called on to draw the winning raffle ticket, a ticket held by none other than visiting Ben Gorman. Though denied the customary bottle of wine, Ben was quite happy with the $25 substitute.
PRESIDENT LEE noted that young attendees contributed to our meetings and encouraged more members to bring their kids to Rotary. He talked about sweetening the deal with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
President Elect Chris Ranney was up next to begin the day’s program, a special presentation about the Rotary District 5130 Conference held this past May.
He discussed the awards won by various clubs, including two by our very own Club. Special thanks were given to MAUREEN RUDDER and JANE SALDAÑA-TALLEY for their work in preparing the documentation that led to the recognition.
GAIL CARDAROPOLI inspired us with a story of wishing for a water buffalo, but then told us we’d have to read the book to find out what happened.
The conference had a television show theme, so several clubs contributed their recognition of past and current shows and commercials. Our Club presented Cluck Dynasty
featuring BILL GROVERMAN and TONY WESTERN.
JOANNE FERRIS explained the difficulties experienced in production, including uncooperative chickens and the absence of JAY PALM because of hockey competition.
PDG ED FULLERTON discussed the importance of Rotary training and the availability of training opportunities.
SHARI RANNEY discussed the Rotary Youth Exchange program noting that this coming year we will be sending a Petaluma student to Taiwan and hosting a girl from Belgium. Contact Club chair MIKE STAUBER for more information on this great program.
RENÉE HAYES discussed upcoming field trips which will supplant some regular lunches at the PG&CC. These field trips are in response to Club interest expressed in a brainstorming session some months ago. The first trip will be to the Petaluma Arts Center on August 11.
Then, with another tap of his bat, PRESIDENT LEE rang the bell and adjourned the meeting.
