Holiday Party Edition

The annual Holiday Party was a rousing success. The decorations were beautiful and room was filled with laughter and good cheer. PRESIDENT NANCY COOLEY, along with Committee Chair KATHY O’CONNOR and her many helpers truly orchestrated a wonderful evening. Once the dinner and program were concluded, the real fun began as the band played some fantastic hits. Please enjoy the photos from our illustrious editor-in-chief, AL CATTALINI, and also enjoy a Christmas Message from the Rotary Club of St. Kitts. It is a reminder to all of us that regardless of your location and situation, there are always people suffering who need our assistance. Even on a beautiful, sun-drenched island that many of us would consider “paradise”, there are people who suffer from hunger, homelessness and poverty.

Happy Holidays to all and may the spirit of Rotary help us to help others during this Holiday Season!

FROM THE ROTARY CLUB OF ST. KITTS

St. Kitts Rotary Club logo

Fellow Rotarians, Christmas is a time when we celebrate Jesus’ birth. It is a time when we are reminded that Jesus came into this world to bring hope and to spread peace on earth and goodwill to all of us.

It is also the time of the year when we have friends and family visiting and we demonstrate a spirit of togetherness in our community. Our Rotary traditions have always included bringing cheer to the less fortunate such as the Cardin Home residents, the Foster Care children and the needy in our community, through our annual Christmas luncheon, Christmas party and care packages respectively.

Let us continue to remember these and other persons who are in need because Christmas is a time for giving. Giving and sharing, however, does not always mean giving money or material things. Sometimes taking time to help and give comfort to someone in need is worth as much or more. As individuals, let us find time in our busy schedules to give a word of encouragement to another individual with a broken spirit, a neighbour, a relative, a friend going through a particularly difficult time. Let us give of ourselves, not as an obligation, but as a desire.

We can all agree that times are harder now than they have ever been. We are all aware of the increase in crime in our Federation and we need to do what we can to put an end to it. Obesity, diabetes and HIV/AIDS are becoming more prevalent in our society. Educating the young and old alike about these diseases has become a necessity. The youth are not respecting their elders and there is no other time than now for us to be our brothers’ keepers. The world is suffering from high oil and commodity prices, and our Federation is not immune to these economic influences. Therefore, we are left to find creative solutions to provide a comfortable life for ourselves and for those who are dependent on us — family, employees and the community.

As we reflect on the year that has passed and approach a new year, ponder on what we can do as a club to continue to make a difference in our community. As Gandhi said, “you must be the change you want to see in this world”. What changes do you personally plan to make to see changes in our Federation? Let us remind ourselves once again why Jesus came into this world and I would say it seems apt to pray now more than ever “let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me”.

I pray we will have a peaceful, enjoyable and safe Christmas.

I wish for you, your families and visiting friends, peace, love, happiness and prosperity this Christmas and always.

How delighted were the members when past president ONITA PELLEGRINI called them to order in place of the vacationing PRESIDENT NANCY COOLEY?

Photo

A Pledge of Allegiance was led by JOANNE FERRIS.

Photo

Promoting our club’s song, BARNEY FAUSS led "I’m a Rambler" followed by "God Bless America".

Presumably there was a thought for the day, but this editor missed it! (Apologies!)

You could see the resemblance when STEVE POWELL introduced his guest, son Kyle.

Photo

The November birthdays were celebrated: FRED WULFF, RICH JOHNSON, JUDI ALLEWELT, STEVE POWELL, RICK MOSSI, MICHAEL NISTLER and ANDY KVALHEIM with song and fines.

Photo

Having drawn the short straw, BRIAN BREEN represented the Super Raffle and Crab Feed leaders. The raffle team leaders are under final scrutiny with the draft to occur after Thanksgiving. Everyone is invited to this outstanding Crab Feed Feb. 22 — one of the best in Petaluma!

Photo

After the meeting today, JUDI invited all members in good health to give blood at the community center from 3 — 7 pm in honor of CJ Banascek. JUDI is also looking for a few more members to deliver Christmas Gifts after the meeting on Dec. 13th.

Photo

November’s SCARC Dinner will be on Nov. 29th hosted by the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa West. If you want to attend, PAUL needs to know by the end of the meeting. He also gave a great Village People rendition of YMCA as a tribute to Greg O’Brien.

Photo

KATHY O’CONNOR invited all members to join the members’ Holiday Party on Nov. 30th in this very room! There will be a band and great food!

Photo

Saluting his father’s military service in the US Army beginning in 1917, Dr. ROY MUSICK told a very personal story about his father’s battlefield injury and the war department report declaring him KIA. In the Musick family, 11/11/11is known as Armistice Day.

Great announcement by Rotary Club of Petaluma Foundation President LEROY BEAN about a board meeting on Monday Nov. 19 at 8 am in the Exchange Bank conference room. There are a few amendments to the bylaws that need to be approved and we’ll see the July yearend financial report.

Photo

In questioning MICHAEL CARUANA about his recent absence from the club, Past President Onita learned that he was in South Africa visiting his son who is a Ph.D. candidate in Johannesburg. Maybe some of our members could be the next focus of fossil study! Michael visited the Rotary Club of Johannesburg, founded in 1922, while there. He happily paid a fine for a great trip.

Photo

Vacation for GREG O’BRIEN coincided with his birthday so the family celebrated in Disneyland! Because it is so expensive to stay in the Magic Kingdom, Greg got away with a fine of $40.

Photo

In celebration of not doing anything notable, PAUL LOUNIBOS paid $100.

Photo

Not to be outdone, JAY PALM was the lucky raffle winner and won a bottle of wine.

Great program speaker — Leadership Coach Laurie Cameron spoke on the 5 Myths of Successful Leadership.

While President NANCY COOLEY was sunning herself and sipping Mai-Tais on the beaches of Maui, our nattily attired President-Elect, RICK MOSSI, dutifully opened our regular luncheon meeting at precisely the appointed half-hour and immediately had AL CATTALINI lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Photo

After a brief reminder from the Prez-Elect on the upcoming Veteran’s Day Parade, LOU STEINBERG then led us in song ("Gypo" and "God Bless America"),

Photo

. . . followed by a heartfelt Thought for the Day from WHITNEY HALL on what it means to be a veteran, including a tribute to our beloved Past-President, Gene Benedetti. The customary greetings, hugs, and busses amongst members ensued.

There were no visiting Rotarians to introduce, but the Prez-Elect and WHITNEY HALL each had guests who joined us for lunch. We were then treated to a medley of announcements and reports:

Photo

The Prez-Elect reminded all of the Friendship Feast attendees who haven’t yet paid to do so ASAP by remitting their checks to Friendship Feast Chairman MIKE BADDELEY so he can finalize his event report.

Photo

KATHY O’CONNOR reminded everyone that the annual Holiday Party will be held on Friday, November 30 this year at the Sheraton, so if you haven’t yet signed-up, please do so at the next meeting — call STEVE POWELL for more details.

Photo

JUDI ALLEWELT needs shoppers, wrappers (no, not like Snoop Dog, Breen!) and drivers for Holiday gifts and deliveries — call Judi for details if you can help.

Richie Lemos, from the Southern Sonoma County Interact, announced their upcoming Taco Tuesday fundraising event on November 13 at Lagunitas Brewery (North McDowell Blvd) - $20 per person gets you in the door for all the tacos and fun you can handle.

Photo

RICARDO MARZO announced that the Club’s annual Crab Feed will be Friday, February 22, 2013 (you can get dinner tickets by contacting JAMES BURLESON’s office),

Photo

. . . and LEE REPOSA is handling the Crab Feed raffle (you’ll be duly contacted once the team ticket sales captains have been appointed).

Photo

WHITNEY HALL announced that there is a meeting for the Club’s school project next Tuesday (Nov. 13), 5:30 p.m. at CLARK ROSEN’s office.

Photo

DAVID SOLO reminded us that November is Rotary International Foundation month, so it would be a great time to complete your Paul Harris — contact Dave for further details.

Photo
Len Mygatt recounts his military service.

The Prez-Elect then had all of the Veterans among us stand up to be recognized and recount what being a veteran means to them. In honor of our Veterans, we then passed the hat to collect $$ for a Veteran related cause, and a total of $345 was raised on the spot.

Photo

MICHAEL CARUANA had the winning raffle ticket, and won a nice bottle of wine.

Photo

JAY PALM then introduced our speaker, Gretchen Werner, the Literacy Connection Coordinator for the Volunteer Center of Sonoma County, who gave us an informative presentation on their Schools of Hope program and its volunteers. An autographed dictionary will be donated to a local high school library in her name for a program well received.

Photo

Whereupon, the Prez-Elect, after reminding us that President Nancy is in Hawaii for two weeks and we’re not, summarily adjourned the meeting! See you next week.
