Fall was in the air as PRESIDENT JOANNE opened our mid-November meeting by inviting FRED WULFF to lead the Pledge of Allegiance.
BARNEY FAUSS was up next, warming up the crowd with I’m a Gambler, . . . , followed by God Bless America.
Exchange student Johannes Alvekrans, having just this week taken up residence in the Ferris household, delivered his Thought for the Day.
Sunshine Report. RICARDO MARZO’s 10-year-old son, Peter, will be undergoing open heart surgery at Stanford next Wednesday to repair a leaking heart valve. Please keep the Marzo family in your prayers as they approach a very special Thanksgiving.
November birthdays were celebrated with FRED WULFF, RICK MOSSI, CLARK ROSEN, JUDI ALLEWELT, and MICHAEL NISTLER sitting at the birthday table.
Super Raffle Chair LEE REPOSA announced that team captains had been selected and that tickets will be distributed soon. It appears that an error on the first batch of tickets required reprinting and suggests a fine in the near future for an errant Rotarian.
KATHY O’CONNOR reminded members to RSVP for the December 9 Holiday Party at Graziano’s. Please RSVP online right away; even if you won’t be able to attend, your response will be helpful! Kathy suggested that attendees not park in the Bank of America parking lot that night lest their car be towed away. RICK MOSSI noted that the Exchange Bank was much more hospitable!
NANCY COOLEY said that Hope Solo’s brother had spurned her invitation to dance at the party. GARY BRODIE was quickly offered as a substitute but DAVID BARBIERI warned that, this time, Gary shouldn’t dance on the table.
JIM BECKER reminded members that raffle tickets are still available for a trip to the RI Convention in Bangkok in May. The drawing is November 30.
JUDIE ALLEWELT, chair of the children’s holiday gift program, reminded members that we’d be shopping at K-Mart on Monday and Tuesday, November 28 and 29 from 7am. She can use more shoppers so contact her if you can help out. It’s a fun job!
The gifts will then be wrapped by Interact members and Rotarians on Saturday, December 10 at St. Vincent High School. The wrapping starts at 9am. Free hot chocolate!
PRESIDENT JOANNE announced that we are joining our fellow Rotary Clubs in Petaluma to sponsor a blood drive on Thursday, December 15 (3pm-7pm) at the Petaluma Community Center.
After Secretary GAIL CARDAROPOLI certified that a quorum was indeed present, LOU STEINBERG moved, with FRED KENYON seconding, that the proposed new Club Bylaws be adopted as written. They were approved by a unanimous vote.
CLARK ROSEN introduced five woodshop students from Kenilworth Junior High School, accompanied by a parent and school principal, Colleen Hill.
They displayed samples of wooden toys they will manufacture for our distribution to needy kids.
BANO CUMMINGS described a weeklong adventure doing “girl stuff” with a pal in Irvine. Seems like the adventure included dropping a purse in the ocean. Bano’s purse was lightened by a $25 fine which she gladly paid, noting that she’d be paying a bigger fine for something big that was happening in nine months. (We wondered why Bano had such a big smile today!)
RICK VAN BEBBER described celebrating the 110th anniversary of the family business, observing that it’s now being managed by the fifth generation of the family with the sixth generation waiting in the wings. Congratulations, Rick! And thanks for the $110 fine you contributed.
JAMES GOTELLI also had reason to smile. He turned 40, bought a new truck, and soon will be off on an adventure — swimming with sharks. President Joanne wisely collected his fine, $100, before he went swimming.
MICHAEL CARUANA has experienced some excitement as well. In September he completed the Moo Cow Half-Marathon (13.1 miles!). Following that, he was off to a family reunion at the home of a cousin in France. These travels cost Michael $50.
DON RAMATICI had the winning raffle ticket, drew the proper rock, and collected the $350 jackpot which he graciously donated to our local Rotary Foundation. As a thank you for his generosity, President Joanne presented him the untaken bottle of wine.
Petaluma Police Chief DANNY FISH introduced officer Cory Joerger and her police dog, Tango. After a brief Q&A session we adjourned to the parking lot for a demonstration of a K-9 unit in action. Protected by a “Michelin Man” suit, Danny served as the fugitive/suspect/bad guy to be stopped by Tango. It was quite a show!
The Club will be dark on Thanksgiving. Have a great Holiday!

HAPPY VETERANS DAY!
PRESIDENT JOANNE FERRIS started the meeting off by asking all Veterans to stand. She thanked them for their invaluable service to our country and they received a loud round of applause from the membership.
AL CATTALINI led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and he did a magnificent job.
MICHAEL CARUANA played us a beautiful version of “Taps” on videotape and the crowd thoroughly enjoyed NOT having to sing “God Bless America”.
Rick Mossi delivers his Thought for the Day.
KATHY O’CONNOR reminded us to RSVP to the members' Holiday Party on December 9th. Please get your information to her sooner than later.
DAVID SOLO (better known these days as Hope Solo’s brother) promised to give us a rousing dance experience at the Holiday Party. While this may actually deter some members from attending, please remember the children that benefit from our events! There is even a salacious rumor that David may go shirt-less! (God help us).
Tawny contemplates a shirtless David Solo.
PRESIDENT JOANNE FERRIS announced that GEOFF ELLIS has graciously accepted to be the new Dictionary Program Chairman. We congratulated him for a job well done and we pledged to make his job easier by signing up for every dictionary delivery date (shameless editor plug to help out his brother-in-law!).
Michael Caruana presents flute to SVHS Principal John Walker.
RI Raffle offers trip to Bangkok for RI Convention.
The fine can came out for LARRY JONAS in what can only be described as one of the best “photo-shopped” photos ever to be presented to the Club. Larry was gracious enough to pay $40 for getting his “message” across at the Occupy Petaluma protest – yes, the palatial home on Wallenberg is still for sale.
MICHAEL BADDELEY had some hilarious words for Larry and the membership was rolling in laughter.
What's our flag doing at Rancho Veal?
FRED WULFF won the Raffle and walked away with a bottle of wine.
Our Speaker for Veterans Day was Bill Shea, who is the father of fallen veteran (and SVHS alumnus)Tim Shea. Tim Shea was killed in Iraq, but his legacy continues through St. Vincent High School (Tim Shea Day) and our greater community. Bill’s presentation was amazing and the crowd moved from tears to laughter as Bill told us his son’s story and the importance of our nation’s veterans – their sacrifice and our debt to them. It was part history lesson, part memorial, but the most important part was the connection and love from father to son and from son to country. Our motto: “service above self” was never clearer than during Bill’s presentation. God Bless.

November 10 - Special Veteran's Day program featuring Sonoma Rotarian Bill Shea whose son, Tim, was killed in action in 2005 in Iraq
November 17 - Petaluma Police Department - K-9 talk and demo; (Also: Bylaws election)
November 24 - Thanksgiving; club dark
PRESIDENT JOANNE FERRIS opened the meeting at the wonderful Mr. McGoo’s and began with a friendly “Welcome” and the Pledge of Allegiance.
This was followed by our song leader RICARDO MARZO leading us with his booming vocals and short stature to God Bless America.
Then the Thought of the Day was given by our own LEN MYGATT. LEN tossed out a famous quotes for everyone to guess. MARZO with his vocals all warmed up yelled out Kim Kardashian. It was the famous FDR. The customary handshakes and hugs amongst the members ensued.
LEE REPOSA introduced his guest and cousin, Jeff.
KATHY O’CONNOR reminded us all of the upcoming Holiday Party. Please RSVP, we’ll have a live band!
Gail announces November 17 SCARC Dinner.
Once again we were having issues with our microphone so everyone’s eyes turned to the audio guru, MICHAEL NISTLER. He had a valid excuse; we had too many pacemakers in the room.
LEE REPOSA announced the preparation for our upcoming, money making, Super Raffle. The committee is looking for a few more Rotarians who would like to become captains and lead their team to victory. (On a side note, if no one signs up you may be getting a call from the committee muscle aka. Hope Solo’s brother.)
We all heard about the Occupy Petaluma movement however most of our club members did not attend except one. It was brought to the attention of PRESIDENT JOANNE that this one was the one and only, LARRY JONAS. And of course we can count on LARRY to capitalize on the cause. As he is seen in a photo trying to sell his palace on the hill amongst the other demonstrators.
The fines started with JAY PALM. PRESIDENT JOANNE called on JAY to find out what he knew about the club flag in front of his store. He explained that he had nothing to do with it and while he was enjoying a fun filled vacation in Disneyland, he received a text alerting him of the news. He was let off the hook temporarily for the flag but paid a $25 fine for his trip.
Even after his pacemaker comment, MICHAEL NISTLER was still allowed to win the raffle and took home a nice bottle of wine.
GREG O’BRIEN introduced our speaker, past club member, Steve Rustad. Steve spoke about marketing; what it is, who needs it, and how to do it.
Wrapping up the meeting, our President wished everybody a wonderful day and adjourned the meeting.
