As Rotarians and their guests arrived at Pazzo for the annual Holiday Party they were greeted by PRESIDENT CLARK ROSEN and his wife, Patti, and offered a glass of bubby or fine wine. Mingling, socializing, and nibbling on hors d’oeuvres followed. Conversation flowed and a recurring theme seemed to be, “Who would be the President-Elect nominee?”

After a delightful Italian meal, PRESIDENT CLARK rose and called the official meeting to order.

The first order of business was to thank KATHY O’CONNOR and her committee (notably GAIL CARDAROPOLI) for organizing the party.

Then CLARK introduced LEE BEAN, Chair of the Nominating Committee, to introduce the member proposed to lead our Club in 2012-2013. After a teasingly long introduction, he announced that . . .

LORETTA CATAROZOLI would follow JOANNE FERRIS as President. The crowd rose in applause as a smiling LORETTA accepted the nomination. The nomination was seconded and unanimously approved and that ended the official meeting. But the night wasn’t over by a long shot. Dancing, conversation, and general festivity continued for quite a while.

Thanks, KATHY, for another great party!

On the fourth Thursday in December and the next to the last meeting for 2010 we met at Mister Magoo’s. The day was overcast, but the parking lot was full, and, thanks to Tony, the Mexican lunch fare was tasty.

PRESIDENT CLARK ROSEN called the meeting to order and led us in the pledge of allegiance. Song master BARNEY FAUSS led members as we sang the club theme song (“I’m a Rambler…I’m a Gambler”) and an ever so sweet rendition of “God Bless America.”

PAUL LOUNIBOS gave us a short but pithy thought for the day; a quote from Winston Churchill reminding us of the difference between optimists and pessimists.

After club greetings, we introduced one visiting Rotarian (Oak Dowling from San Rafael Main). Rotarians with guests included John Bechtal (who was introduced by BARNEY FAUSS standing for the missing AL KAPLAN and working with a microphone that was “dead as a doornail”); RICK MOSSI introduced Jim McNulty; AL CATTALINI introduced Travis Collier from the Two Rock Coast Guard Training Center who was doing ‘advance recon’ on our club in preparation for the upcoming meeting.

The Sunshine Report from PRESIDENT CLARK let us know that JEANETTE CLARK’s husband, Kenton, is finally on the mend (and hopefully able to eat soon), while HERB BUNDESEN let us know that Ted Adkins ‘seems fine’ and is adjusting to his surroundings.

PRESIDENT CLARK announced December anniversaries for RICK GORMAN, PAT CONKLIN, STEVE OLMSTED, DAN LIBARLE, ED FULLERTON, and ANDY KVALHEIM (who got the prize for being married the longest…since 1953!).

KATHY O’CONNOR and PRESIDENT CLARK reminded members to RSVP in person or online for the December 9 Holiday Party and invited everyone to ‘bring a guest’!

JUDY ALLEWELT announced she had tickets for the Real Estate Breakfast raffle for sale.

GAIL CARDAROPOLI, MICHAEL NISTLER, JUDY ALLEWELT, and JOANNE FERRIS announced the need for volunteers to help with the Children’s Holiday Gift project. See Gail and Michael if you’re interested in being a driver for the package deliver. Contact Judy if you want to help purchased gifts at Kmart, and Joanne if you’d like to help the Interact students wrap the gifts Saturday, December 12 at St. Vincent’s High School.

LOU STEINBERG reminded club members that he is still looking for a home for the Youth Exchange student.

PRESIDENT CLARK came close to fining STEVE LAFRANCHI, but was so glad to see him, he didn’t…at least not this time!

RICK GORMAN’s number came up in the drawing (this is twice now for him!) and he walked away with ‘a nice bottle of wine.’ This reporter learned (and wonders why, oh why) JIM McCAFFREY’s number has NEVER come up in all the year’s he has faithfully served the club??? Where’s the fairness in that?

JOANNE FERRIS gave a warm Rotary welcome to the day’s speaker, Mary Dowling, who spoke with great good humor (and a few belly laughs) on the topic of “Laughing for the Health of It.” Members got more than a few giggles, laughs, snickers, chuckles, sniggers, hoots, cackles, chortles, hoots, snorts, and guffaws from the program. We walked away healthier and happier for the experience!
