October 7 - Assemblyman Jarred Huffman - Update on State Politics
October 11 - District 5130 Vision Facilitation Team Visit (5-9 pm, sponsored by Petaluma Rotary Club Long-Range Planning Committee, Location: St. Vincent de Paul High School)
October 14 - District Governor Jim Flamson
October 21 - Larry Anderson - Petaluma Fire Chief
October 28 - Amy Gutierrez - SF Giants Broadcaster - "From Petaluma HS to Giants TV Fame"
PRESIDENT CLARK ROSEN started off the meeting by asking HERB BUNDESEN to lead us in song. The membership sang “My Country Tis of Thee” and JUDI ALLEWELT gave us the Thought of the Day – highlighting the difference between knowledge and wisdom. “Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit, but wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit basket.”
The Sunshine Report included our beloved Editor-in-Chief, AL CATTALINI, who was in the hospital, but is now recuperating at home. JOHN DADO recognized the passing of a former member, Harry Kimball, and the Club observed a moment of silence in his honor.
PRESIDENT ELECT JOANNE FERRIS announced that the Rotary Visionary Program will be held on October 11. All members are encouraged to participate and exchange ideas regarding our Club’s future and direction.
PRESIDENT CLARK ROSEN gave a wrap-up of the Golf Tournament and praise to all the Rotarians who helped make it a terrific event, including JOHN DADO, TOM BRANDAL, RICH JOHNSON and ONITA PELLEGRINI. On October 24, Rotarians will gather en masse to celebrate our Polio eradication efforts. Originally scheduled as a walk across the Golden Gate Bridge, the event will now be a walk from Fisherman’s Wharf to the Ferry Building.
PRESIDENT CLARK ROSEN also announced changes to our annual Friendship Feasts. The multiple events hosted by members will be moved from October to next April. The break from tradition will hopefully allow some newer members to participate/host and PRESIDENT CLARK encouraged members to combine their efforts to lessen the burden. As the major fundraiser for the Dictionary Program, these events require maximum participation from all members.
The Fine Can made its weekly appearance and DON RAMATICI was the first victim. A lost pair of sunglasses at his table of the Golf Tournament turned out to belong to Mary McCaffrey, but DON paid the fine as JIM McCAFFREY collected his wife’s glasses.
BARNEY FAUSS was next for his usual infractions and offered $5 to the kitty. BABE AMARAL was very upset that BILL GROVERMAN was hosting a party and no Rotarians were invited and BILL revealed his wife was hosting a Ladies Only party. BABE offered to help out at the event, but was kindly rebuffed.
Serious Rotarians ponder weighty matters.
JOANNE FERRIS paid $50 for her daughter’s recent wedding and announced that she was now returning to her normal, gentle self (it seems weddings can make people a little crazy…).
JOHN DADO added another $50 for the year-long celebration of his 50th wedding anniversary.
There was a chorus of rumblings from the crowd when PRESIDENT CLARK drew the winning raffle AND the brown rock (the bag looked a little light). Our President graciously donated $100 each to local and international projects and kept $25 for himself. Way to go Mr. President! He also announced that from Oct. 18-24 the Club will be matching donations for Polio Plus.
RICK MOSSI introduced our guest, Exchange Bank CEO Bill Schrader, who gave an excellent presentation on Leadership Under Adversity. His story was personal, poignant and engaging (and had very little to do with banking!). He highlighted the importance of leadership during these difficult times and how our country has always responded to adversity. He gave wonderful historical examples and reminded us that together as a nation we can weather the storm and continue to lead the world. Thank you, Bill, for an outstanding presentation!

This week’s meeting was a bit different. Different day, different location, different time, different meal. Yep, it was the annual Golf Tournament extravaganza, Monday, September 20 at Petaluma Golf and Country Club.
The hard work of JOHN DADO and ONITA PELLEGRINI showed as the event went off without a hitch. Even the weather was perfect!
Golfers gathered at 11:00 a.m. to check in and to eat a delicious grilled burger lunch provided by Traxx.
MELISSA KOSITZIN, ONITA, TAWNY TESCONI, LOU STEINBERG and ED FULLERTON staffed the registration table.
Actual golfing began at noon with a shotgun start for the 18 foursomes.
By 5:00 p.m. the cocktail lounge was filling up with golfers, joined by many others who arrived for the legendary prime rib dinner (total diners: 110), cooked by PAUL RAMATICI, John Barella, and STEVE HENRIS, . . .
. . . with all the fixings prepared by BUTCH SPOLINI. PAUL LOUNIBOS, BANO CUMMINGS, Patti Rosen, and SHERRY BURWEN gave BUTCH a hand in the kitchen.
PRESIDENT CLARK called the meeting to order, led the Pledge of Allegiance, and called on BARNEY FAUSS to lead the opening song.
JIM McCAFFREY was up next for the thought for the day and invocation.
Then PRESIDENT CLARK recessed the meeting for the great prime rib dinner.
After dessert it was time to acknowledge the sponsors who included Tony McGaughey (Mr. McGoo’s), LORETTA CATAROZOLI (First Community Bank), NANCY COOLEY (State Farm Insurance), and TOM BRANDAl (V. Dolan Trucking). A special thank you went to Snowden Vineyards for the dinner wines and to MELISSA KOSITZIN who brokered the deal.
Then prizes were presented to the tournament winners:
Then the evening was over and Rotarians headed downhill filled with prime rib and pleasant memories of a beautiful day. Thanks, again, JOHN and ONITA for a wonderful event!

On the third Thursday in January we met at Mister Magoo’s. The day was sunny, the parking lot was full, and thanks to Tony the lunch, as usual, was tasty.

FRED FROST has taken on the assignment of “Bulb Master” and the task of assembling various types of CFL’s (compact fluorescent light bulbs) for us to examine, sample, and hopefully buy for our homes and businesses as part of PRESIDENT CLARK’s ‘green initiative’. FRED did a great job showing his current collection and promised to bring more information to us in the future.
During the ‘fine’ portion of the meeting, KATHY O’CONNER’s recent and rather extensive travel adventures resulted lots of fun and a hefty contribution toward her fine schedule! STEVE POWELL gave it up for his daughter’s wedding and his own vacation fun!
DON RAMATICI’s number came up in the drawing and he walked away with ‘a nice bottle of wine.’
DAVE BARBIERI gave a warm Rotary welcome to the day’s speaker, Larry Levy, a Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Ignacio who spoke passionately and eloquently about the San Quentin Squires Project sponsored by his club and featured in April’s edition of the Rotarian magazine.

On Thursday, September 2, 2010, the Rotary Club of Petaluma met at Mister McGoo’s for fellowship and good food. It was a warm day so it was only fitting that our meal consisted of hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries and onion rings.
The bell sounded at precisely 12:30 and PRESIDENT CLARK ROSEN looked surprised by the huge applause. He immediately led us in the Pledge to the Flag.
HERB BUNDESEN led us in song. HERB suggested that we mix it up a little with You’re a Grand Old Flag by George M. Cohan but some of us struggled with the words. It was a little weak but the concept was well accepted by the group. It’ll get better. (I hope!)
MICHAEL CARUANA gave the “Thought for the Day”.
The usual hugs and handshakes quickly followed. The visiting Rotarians and the Rotarians with guests were then introduced.
Ed Fullerton spreads some sunshine.

No caption is necessary to explain today's raffle.
It was time for the PREZ to make some money for the Club but none of his intended victims showed up. He went directly to our speaker for the day.
Ed Fullerton introduces Rick Phillips.
Rick Phillips from Safe School Ambassadors (SSA) gave a very interesting commentary on this program. SSA program is currently in approximately 1,000 public and private schools across the United States and Canada. It is a unique, student centered approach to stop bullying and violence. SSA equips and empowers students to prevent acts of harassment and intolerance. Since 2001, nearly 30,000 Ambassadors have been trained, empowering 4-12th graders with non-violent communication skills to reduce emotional and physical violence among peers. GRETA VIGUIE announced that the program has started in the two Petaluma Junior Highs and Cherry Valley Charter School. The program is impacting attendance and academic performance.
Meeting adjourned.
