PRESIDENT CLARK opened our meeting to the room of standing Rotarians with the traditional pledge of allegiance.
TED ADKINS returned and reminded everyone how much we miss him by leading a strong version of God Bless America.
The Thought for the Day was brought to us by GRETA VIGUE. She relayed Thomas Edison’s philosophy on productive ways to view failure—that it is actually an advancement because you have discovered another way on how not to do something and thus, are closer to the solution.
We had a visiting Rotarian all the way from the Phillipines. JAY PALM, PAUL LOUNIBOS, JIM BECKER, ROY MUSICK and PRESIDENT CLARK all brought guests with them.
The sunshine report by AL KAPLAN brought us news that we could already see with our own eyes that Ted is doing great. Also, that NIT ANDERSON would be undergoing heart bypass surgery down at Kaiser in San Francisco. Our best wishes are with her and at press time, we have a report that the surgery went well and she is recovering.
Please reserve your spot on the bus for the Day at the Races which are starting this week. There is only space for about 40 for this all day affair that is sure to be a great time.
The Salute to Rotary insert appeared in the Argus this past week and looked great. It really is a great way to showcase for the community the value of what the Rotary Clubs in Petaluma bring.
PRESIDENT CLARK wielded his relatively new power by levying the following fines.
LEROY BEAN was fined for his 4th or 5th retirement from UCSF. This cost him $25 and he promised only to retire 3 or 4 more times.
Old news but WALLY BRAGDON was fined for falling changing a light bulb and breaking his neck. What a considerate group we Rotarians are by fining Wally $50 for breaking his neck.
The raffle had been on a 2 week brown rock run until Cindy Morelli broke it by drawing a blue rock and winning a bottle of wine.
The program was outstanding as we knew it would be when a returning guest, Peter Morelli, was announced. Peter is a high school principal from Stockton and a decorated NFL referee. He explained some of the inner workings of what needs to get done to bring the NFL product on the field and really what is involved in the job of working for the NFL in that capacity. It was very colorful and interesting to hear.
With a few questions and the pounding of the gavel, our meeting was adjourned.

August 5 - Club meets at the Sonoma County Fair
On Thursday, July 15th, the Rotary Club of Petaluma met at Mister McGoo’s for fellowship and good food. The new parking along the perimeter of Enterprise is great. Good job PRESIDENT CLARK in the negotiations.
The bell sounded at precisely 12:30 and PRESIDENT CLARK ROSEN looked surprised by the huge applause. JIM BECKER was kind enough to hold the little flag so the Club could recite the Pledge to the Flag. (The big flag was in the back of the room).
HERB BUNDESEN led us in song. PRESIDENT CLARK suggested that we mix it up a little. The words to "You're a Grand Old Flag" by George M. Cohan were passed out. It was a little weak but the concept was well accepted by the group. It’ll get better. (I hope!)
MICHAEL CARUANA gave the “Thought for the Day”.
The usual hugs and handshakes quickly followed. DAVID BARBIERI introduced visiting Rotarians George Wagner, Jeff England and Greg Freitas. The Rotarians with guests were then introduced.
The Sunshine Report revealed some great news. PAUL LOUNIBOS is back. The crowd smiled and applauded.
Time for announcements:
Jeff England from the Sunrise Club is sponsoring a social at the Central Market on July 22nd at 5:00 for all Rotarians.
The SRJC is having a play, “Forever Plaid” on August 8th. The play is at 6:00 followed by a reception at 8:00.
Larry and Kip discuss signage along Lakeville Highway.
Don’t forget about the Art & Equestrian Event this Sunday, July 25th from 11:00 to 5:00. Thanks to MICHAEL NISTLER we’re on YouTube.
George Wagner had sign-ups for the Rose Tournament sponsored by the Petaluma People Services. It’s August 6th.
It was time for the PREZ to make some money for the Club. JAY PALM was asked to stand. JAY’s twins, Jim and Jake, are now 6 years old and will be in first grade at Penngrove School. JAY paid $20 apiece for the boys.
JIM BECKER paid $50 for a trip to Barcelona, Spain. He watched the World Cup at an Irish Pub and had lunch in France. Life is tough for JIM.
MELISSA KOSITZIN came forward for her Craft Talk. Melissa is a dispatcher for the Rohnert Park Police Department. In her spare time she has sold Avon and Pampered Chef. She is now involved with a company called Tastefully Simple. She passed around some yummy snacks to entice us into having a party for fun, friends and fabulous food. It sounds like the company would be interested in teaming with Rotary for a fundraiser. Thanks Melissa! Welcome to the Club.
SHERRY BURWEN’s guest, Charlotte Barbieri, picked the brown rock and walked away with $25. That’s the 2nd week in a row that the raffle winner took the cash.
JIM BECKER introduced our guest speaker, George Wagner. His sidekick, ERIK GUNHEIM, was off practicing law. George gave a power point demonstration on abalone and abalone diving. The poor abalone has no brain and takes 12 years to grow 7 inches. The largest abalone retrieved from the ocean is 12 5/16 inches. The program was very informative, especially to those of us who just eat them.
Meeting adjourned.
NEW MEMBER PROPOSALS
The club has received an application for induction of the following new members:
If any member in good standing has an objection to either person, such objection should be made in writing to the club board of directors within 7 days of receipt of this notice.

It was President CLARK ROSEN’s second meeting in the presidential saddle this second Thursday in July. Though his debunking is far, far away, at least CLARK got to eat lunch this week! The day was sunny, cool and Mister Magoo’s parking lot was full. As usual, the lunch was tasty and (OMG!!!) our good friend BABE was back in action!
PRESIDENT CLARK called the meeting to order and led us in the pledge of allegiance. Song master BARNEY FAUSS led the club (to hear him tell it) in “a terrible” round of “I’m a Rambler” followed by a more acceptable rendition of “God Bless America.”
JUDI ALLEWELT kept us standing as she gave the thought for the day consisting of a two-sentence quote from Mark Twain…”Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.”
After decidedly rowdy club greetings, PRESIDENT CLARK cracked the whip and got us back to “a packed agenda” by announcing there were no visiting Rotarians. Rotarians with guests included ONITA PELLEGRINI (who introduced Don and Peter from G & C Auto), STAN LAWSON (who was finally present to introduce his good sported wife, Gabriela…more on that later), FRED WULFF (who introduced President CLARK’s guest Len who was formerly a Rotarian in Pennsylvania…classification Food Packaging), CHRIS ALBERTSON (who introduced Police Chief Dan Fish, our speaker for the day), LOU STEINBERG (who introduced PRESIDENT CLARK’s other guest, Dennis Hartle).
In the sunshine report, PRESIDENT CLARK pointed out that BABE AMARAL was doing so much better he was at the meeting and Babe confirmed that his doc gave him permission.
PRESIDENT CLARK (with STEVE OLMSTED lurking in the background) reminded members who still owe semi-annual Club dues to get those in soon. Members were also reminded of the various ways we can all help out with the PAEFest fundraiser (post signs, work the day of the event, sell tickets at the Art & Garden Festival or Wednesday/Saturday Farmer’s Markets)…sign up sheets are still not complete, so if you haven’t made a commitment please do so soon.
PRESIDENT CLARK’s ‘fine’ portion of the meeting nabbed three members…STAN LAWSON offered up $40 for volunteering his wife to take his assignment at last week’s meeting and for “insulting everyone in the room” by suggesting only she had the wits to do it
…PAT CONKLIN cheerfully gave up $50 for the “great success” of this year’s Sonoma-Marin Fair (along with a plaque to the Club for sponsoring this year’s Petting Zoo)
…TOM BAKER less cheerfully coughed up $50 when PRESIDENT CLARK told him “you got a lotta ‘splainin’ to do” for a picture of TOM with former Vice President Al Gore…was that Gore’s arm around Tom’s shoulder??? Did Gore and Baker get engaged??? Did Gore offer Tom a massage??? Whatever…Tom paid to take the offending pic out of circulation forever.
PRESIDENT CLARK next introduced LEE BEAN for a “meeting within the meeting”…otherwise known as the Annual Meeting of the Rotary Club of Petaluma Foundation. LEE announced the Foundation account now stands at $379,000. Two votes were put to the members…a by-law change to reduce the number of elected members from 15 to 9 (moved, seconded, approved) and the proposal of nine members (RALPH SARTORI, LOU STEINBERG, BILL GROVERMAN, JOHN DADO, RICK MOSSI, JAMES BURLESON, GRETA VIGUIE, JUDI ALLEWELT, and LEE BEAN) to 3-year staggered terms (moved, seconded, approved). Meeting closed.
PRESIDENT CLARK confessed that he “lost his (bag of) rocks” and then found them during last week’s meeting, so was “back in business” for the weekly raffle drawing. After drawing BRIAN BREEN’s number, PRESIDENT CLARK made BRIAN and his broken leg walk all the way to the front of the room to draw from the bag (boy, was THAT painful to watch!), and then lo and behold BRIAN the Gimp draws the brown rock winning all $275!!! A guy with that many kids and a broken leg surely deserves some luck! Congratulations, BRIAN!
PRESIDENT CLARK announced next week’s program would be “All About Abalone” with avid divers, Erik Gunheim and George Wagner…invite a guest!
Retired Fire Chief CHRIS ALBERTSON then introduced the day’s speaker, Petaluma Chief of Police, Dan Fish as his “premonition come true” (you see Chief Albertson interviewed “Danny” long ago for a promotion and predicted even then he would one day become a chief). By the end of Chief Fish’s presentation, we all agreed. Thanks for a great program!

July 8 - Dan Fish, Petaluma Police Chief - "Protecting Petaluma"
July 15 - George Wagner & Erik Gunheim - "All About Abalone"
July 22 - Peter Morelli, NFL Official
July 25 - Petaluma Art & Equestrian Festival
July 29 - Jim Carriere, ShelterBox
PRESIDENT CLARK ROSEN opened the meeting and welcomed a crowd of over 70 to his first meeting.
The new meeting room set up confused some members but in the end everyone had a great time at PRESIDENT CLARK’s first meeting.
PRESIDENT CLARK led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance and BARNEY FAUSS was the song leader of “God Bless America”.
One of our newer members RICK GORMAN gave The Thought for The Day which focused on three word sayings that mean so much to someone when spoken to. Examples are: Let me help I thank you, Go for it and the phrase that sums it all up I Love You.
JOE TAMBE introduced our lone visiting Rotarian from the Petaluma Valley Club.
Faces from the past: Erik Gunheim and Paul Lounibos.
The following Rotarians introduced their guests: JOANNE FERRIS, LORETTA CATAROZOLLI, JIM BECKER, JIM MCCAFFREY, KATHY O’CONNOR JAY PALM, KIP HERZOG, TAWNY TESCONI, JEANNETTE CLARK, MICHAEL CARUANA, and TOM BRANDAL.
Sunshine Report: Past Dist Gov.ED FULLERTON reported that TED ADKINS was dealing with some health issues and was doing as well as can be expected.
PRESIDENT CLARK then gave a report on the recent Rotary International Convention he attended in Montreal. He reported that the Polio Plus project continued to achieve great success and that progress is being made in the challenging effort to end Polio worldwide. PRESIDENT CLARK reminded us of this year’s Rotary Theme “Building Communities – Bridging Continents”.
PRESIDENT CLARK then announced those members with July Anniversaries: JAY PALM, JAMES BURLESON, RICARDO MARZO, BRIAN BREEN and PRESIDENT CLARK ROSEN.
RALPH SARTORI reported that the Petaluma High School FFA had two teams in the recent International Dairy Cattle Judging contest that was held in Scotland this past week. The teams placed 1st and 2nd. This was a remarkable feat and we should be proud of these local students. Ralph mentioned that during his term and Past President TOM BRANDAl’s term our club has donated over $8,000.00 to the Petaluma High School FFA to assist the FFA program and that our club’s efforts are appreciated by the community.
MICHAEL CARUANA and LARRY JONAS reported on the upcoming Art & Equestrian Festival to be held on Sunday, July 25th. PRESIDENT CLARK asked club members to purchase at least 3 tickets to this event as a portion of the profits would go to the Children’s Holiday Gift Fund. Members are expected to work 3 hrs. to support this event. Contact Michael or Larry to find out how you can help.
PRESIDENT CLARK announced that this year’s annual Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, September 20th.
PRESIDENT CLARK then announced that he would only fine one member today. He then called upon WHITNEY HALL to stand up. Whitney was asked what he would offer the club in support of some past sin that should be accounted for. Whitney acting like a typical General went into an explanation on why should he be singled out for past sins when there surely were other club members who could confess much more than him? Just imagine if President Elect JOANNE FERRIS or Past President RALPH SARTORI were asked to account for their sins. In the end Whitney said he would rather end the issue without explanation and offered to pay a $100.00 fine. President Clark accepted the offer and thanked Whitney.
PRESIDENT CLARK Then announced that the raffle drawing would take place and that the pot was at $250.00. Marilyn Herzog was the lucky winner and came forward to see if a brown rock could be pulled from the bag. PRESIDENT CLARK then announced that he was unable to locate his rocks. He then presented Marilyn with a bottle of wine and invited her back to a meeting to draw a rock once President Clark finds them.
TAWNY TESCONI introduced our speaker Brian Sobel who gave a most informative talk on politics.
Brian said that on a national level the “Tea Party” was unlike other 3rd party efforts and that Washington D.C. is much different today with the elections right around the corner. As for California the Bay area Counties will remain heavy Democratic but other areas of California are being sought by both parties. On the local field the 2nd supervisorial seat will be closely watched and that whoever gets the votes of the two defeated candidates will win the election.
CHRIS ALBERTSON announced as of now a CHP officer will address the club on CHP Air Operations. The only thing which may cause for change would be if the CHP was asked to assist in any activities due to the verdict in the Mehserle trial. Petaluma Police Chief Dan Fish will be our speaker should the CHP not be able to attend.
Onita smiles for the camera.
