President TOM “Bye-Bye” BRANDAL opened our last regular meeting of the merry month of May on or about 12:30 p.m., dutifully led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, and had

Past-President BARNEY “Baritone” FAUSS lead us in song (Gypo and God Bless America), with an able assist from DAVE “Sol-a-Mio” SOLA

Past-President JAMES “McInvocation” McCAFFREY gave us an invocation and a Thought for the Day (stay enthusiastic!).  The customary handshakes, hugs and busses amongst the members ensued.

Past-President KIP “Max-a-Million” HERZOG introduced our lone visiting Rotarian, followed by the introduction of all the guests of Rotarians who joined us for lunch.

The Prez then gave us a Sunshine Report: BRIAN “The Boot” BREEN broke his foot in a backhoe accident… but on the bright side, he’s going to be the proud father of a new baby boy (Ed. Note: Branson Breen, 8 lbs. 2 oz, did in fact arrive right on schedule on 5/28/10 – mother Stephanie and Branson are doing fine – however, Brian will be hopping along for a few more weeks until his foot heals!).  HERB “The Harbor” BUNDESEN, PAUL “The Merchant” MASELLI, Past-President CHUCK “Bulldog” BRANDNER and Past-President TED “Astaire” ADKINS are all fighting health issues – we wish them a speedy recovery, and hope to see them all back in action soon!

Bridget “Why Buy When You Can Rent” DOHERTY announced that the Club had received a signed class photo from local students in appreciation of the Rotary Scholarship awarded to them by our Club to fund their science trip.

Next, Bob Wall of the Petaluma Valley Rotary Club then announced that all Rotarians would receive priority seating (and pricing) for the Ella Fitzgerald Show on 9/11/10 at the Cinnabar Theatre – call Bob if you would like to attend.

The Prez then announced that our local Rotary Foundation needs board members, so please call Past-President LEE “Big Board” BEAN if you are interested.

LEE “RYLA Rap” RAPOZA then reminded one and all that our Club is hosting a tri-tip barbeque for 80 kids on Wednesday, June 23, at the upcoming RYLA Camp – call Lee if you would like help or simply attend to show your support.

Next, Past-President LARRY “Pony Boy” JONAS reminded us that our Club’s annual Arts & Equestrian event, slated for July 25, is a major fundraiser, and he and co-chair MICHAEL “Angelo” CARUANA would appreciate all our support, including ticket sales promotion, business sponsorships and set-up for the event – please call Michael to let him know what you can do to help.

The Prez then called upon MIKE “The Muse” BADDELEY to congratulate him for the recognition his daughter, Jordy, received at the recent Press Democrat All Redwood Empire awards ceremony and for being named Petaluma High School’s Female Athlete of the Year…mercifully, there was no fine this time (whew!).

However, JIM “Bulls and Bears” BECKER was not so lucky as the Prez dinged him $50 for missing his Club lunch ticket work assignment.

The Prez went on to extract a $100 port tax from MICHAEL “Nautical” NISTLER for a recent cruise on the high seas,

followed by a $50 sin tax from Past-President DAVE “Amen” AMUNDSEN for a recent get away trip to Maui with his “girlfriend” (according to Dave he had a permission note from wife, Gail!).

Nonplussed, the Prez’ fine time continued as he dinged JOE “Just Say No” TAMBE with a $50 rehab tax for wearing himself out on a recent tennis excursion;

levied a $100 party tax on BRIDGET “Bahama Mama” DOHERTY for her recent trip to St. Lucia and a posh wedding in L.A.;

and assessed a $50 proud papa legacy tax on Secretary STEVE “Rotary Blue” OLMSTED for his daughter Kathleen (a 4th generation Rotarian) chartering a new Rotary Club in Twin Falls, Idaho and being nominated as its first Club President!  Congratulations, Steve (and Kathleen too!).

After raffle ticket # 116818, held by STEVE “Big Gulp” GAVRILOFF, proved to be  good for a bottle of wine,

KATHY “Speakeasy” O’CONNOR then introduced our speaker,

Dr. Gary Daniel, a linguistic specialist, who informed us all about the power and pitfalls of the common words we use every day.  He received a Rotary memento, and an autographed book was donated to a local high school library, for a program well received.

Whereupon, our short timer President wished everybody a safe, observant Memorial Day, and summarily adjourned the meeting

See you in June!

Meeting adjourned.

On the third Thursday in May we met at Mister Magoo’s.

The day was sunny, the parking lot was full, the lunch was tasty and TED WAS BACK!!!

President Tom Brandal called the meeting to order and led us in the pledge of allegiance. Song master Ted Adkins said he came back to show us the rumors about him were ‘greatly exaggerated’ and then led the club in a rousing rendition of “God Bless America.”

Past District President, Ed Fullerton’s gave us four quick thoughts for our day he picked up during the recent District Conference.

After club greetings, Petaluma Valley President Joann Pozzi was introduced as the only visiting Rotarian.

Rotarians with guests included President Tom (who made sure to introduce his wife, Kathy)

Leroy Bean (who introduced his wife, Oralee, and

Jim McCaffrey’s wife, Mary),

Rick Susick (who introduced Erin, Jessica, his wife, Leslie,

and Steve Ellison, retired PHS football coach)

Al Kaplan (who introduced Ted’s son, Clay Adkins),

Joanne Ferris (who introduced her friend Melissa).

In the sunshine report, President Tom shared that Babe Amaral has been seen around town and in the general vicinity of Mr. McGoo’s and Gary Brodie’s shop. Paul Maselli has had a hard time of it lately, but is doing better.

President Tom pulled out an Argus-Courier article that gave the club credit for $1000 contribution in support of housing in Chile…and told us all to “focus on Rotary” when we read it (though past president, Lou Steinberg, later wondered why the President of Dolon Trucking was quoted in the article).

President Tom also welcomed past member Stan Lawson back into the club by giving him his chicken badge, a Rotary pin, and a bill from club secretary, Steve Olmsted (so much for that honeymoon!).

President Tom announced two awards the club received at the District Conference…Lou Steinberg received the Youth Leadership award for his many years of service to RYLA (Joann Ferris wrote his nomination application)…

Lee Roposa, Brian Breen, David Solo, and Steve Powell won the conference golf tourney for the second year in a row and David Solo took the trophy to ‘show off’ at the Sunrise Club.

The May SCARC meeting will be hosted by the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa on May 27. Petaluma Valley President Joann Pozzi announced their 5th annual Million Dollar Classic and presented President Tom with a picture of this year’s Butter and Eggs Day Rotary float.

Rick Gorman announced for his wife, Erica, the opening of the 24th annual Saturday Petaluma Farmer’s Market and the 4th annual Tuesday Night Market.

President Tom called on Ted Adkins son, Clay, to thank him and his sister for doing such a great job caring for their dad. Clay shared some of his recent television appearances and broke the news that he had just been asked to co-host a talk show with Tory Spelling on ABC…you go Clay!!!

Fortunately for us, President Tom’s ‘fine’ portion of the meeting was postponed until next meeting so we could move on to a very special program

David Solo announced and thanked club members who made it possible for us to contribute $10,385 toward the Rotary Foundation, surpassing both the Sunrise and Petaluma Valley clubs in total amount contributed. David then introduced the first annual Petaluma Rotary Club Community Service Award. This year, two awards were given to two individuals who exemplify service above self and the devotion of countless hours of personal time in support of our community.

Retired PHS football coach, Steve Ellison, did the honors. The first award went to club member, Rick Susick, a local physical therapist who took over Ted Adkins practices back in 1989. For the past 21 years, Rick (himself the son of a football legend) has volunteered his time to the PHS football team attending two practices a week, all home and away games, and trying to stay out of the way of the team doctor. He’s earned the trust of players and the admiration of coaches, parents, and the community at large for his generosity and devotion.

The second award went to Dr. Dave Sisler who has practiced medicine in Petaluma for 53 years and served as PHS team doctor since 1977. In that time he’s forged a strong bond with coaches, players and even Rick Susick, seen the 49’ers sell off of Joe Montana, rooted shamelessly for the fake punt, outlasted Steve Ellison, and stayed around long enough to see his grandson join the team.

Both Rick and Doc Sisler received a warm thanks and applause from the members. Both will become Paul Harris Fellows thanks to the generosity of the club. We are fortunate to have such great people in our community!

President Elect Clark Rosen’s number came up in the drawing and he walked away with ‘a nice bottle of wine.’

(Ed note - Ralph also came up to the pulpit to share his thoughtful words of wisdom)

Meeting adjourned.

On the first Thursday in May, the Rotary Club of Petaluma met at Mister McGoo’s for fellowship and good food. The food consisted of Mr. McGoo’s Sunday brunch in honor of our past All Day Breakfast.

The bell sounded at precisely 12:30 and PRESIDENT TOM BRANDAL brought the meeting to order.

The Club recited the Pledge to the Flag and BARNEY FAUSS led us in song.

LARRY JONAS gave the “Thought for the Day”. The message was “Buy American”. The usual hugs and handshakes quickly followed. JUDY ALLEWELT announced that there were no visiting Rotarians. The Rotarians with guests were then introduced. Several Rotarians brought their lovely wives. AL CATTALINI brought Joan. FRED FROST brought Linda and Lee BEAN brought Oralee. JUDY ALLEWELT introduced Melissa, a friend of JOANNE FERRIS. LOU STEINBERG introduced the RYLA students. More about them later.

PRESIDENT TOM let us know that Dana, TED ADKINS’ daughter, called to let him know that TED was home. The word is out that BABE AMARAL is doing very well.

There are three anniversaries in the month of May: Jeannette Clark married in 1958, George Bunnell married in 1966, and Chris Albertson married in 1973.

Remember the District Conference - May 13th to the 16th at the Double Tree in Rohnert Park.

DAVID SOLO announced that we beat the Petaluma Sunrise Club in donations to the Rotary Foundation. YEAH!! Good Job and Thank You!

JOHN DADO announced that May 31st is the deadline for applications for donations from the local foundation. The application can be found on our web site.

LORETTA CATAROZOLI asked for help with the judging of the Casa Grande Senior Projects. For information and a sign up form click here.

It was time for the “Fine Master” to take over the meeting. MIKE BADDELEY started to work the crowd as only MIKE can.

It was easy money when Mike asked all Italians or those married to an Italian to stand. That privilege cost the large crowd $1.00 each.

One of MIKE’s usual victims was not spared. He asked a Jewish developer who was also a dentist and happened to make a political speech in the day’s invocation to please stand. A smiling LARRY JONAS stood while the “Fine Master” imposed a $10 donation to the Club on MR. JONAS.

KATHY O’CONNOR has been missing the past few weeks. KATHY was in San Diego with a friend at a fancy resort and then off to a Motel 6 in Iowa for a Chiropractic Convention. The “Fine Master” got $50 from KATHY.

MIKE looked around the room for RICARDO MARZO and GEOFF ELLIS. He had to settle for their father-in-law, DAN LIBARLE. Looks like DAN hosted the First Communion Party for RICARDO’s son, Peter and GEOFF’s daughter, Lucie. DAN’s face looked shocked when the “Fine Master” assessed $50 each to the son-in-laws and left him alone.

GARY BRODIE was questioned about how many new tires he sold last week. He hesitated ~ knowing the number would be related to the amount of cash out of his pocket to the Club. HE decided that 25 was a good answer.

The last fine of the day went to the PREZ, TOM BRANDAL. He paid $50 to keep the “Fine Master” quiet. Someone must have seen him do something around town to put up the cash so quickly.

It took BARNEY a few minutes to notice his raffle ticket was a winner and walked off with a nice bottle of wine.

PRESIDENT TOM BRANDAL thanked MIKE for a job well done and asked LOU STEINBERG to come up and introduce the RYLA kids that were in attendance.

Rick, Angelica and Seiri spoke of their experience at RYLA camp. They all praised the program. They have become better leaders in their school and developed wonderful new friendships.

Meeting adjourned.
