PRESIDENT TOM BRANDAL called the last meeting of August (only 10 more months to go) to order and asked BARNEY FAUSS to lead us in the pledge of the flag and song. BARNEY did an outstanding job and was given compliments by one of today’s speakers for the most original service club song he had ever witnessed being sung (I’m A Rambler, I’m a Gambler).
JIM McCAFFREY filled in at the last minute and gave the Thought for the Day which focused on being thankful for the many wonderful things we are blessed with.
GAIL CARDAROPOLI introduced the lone visiting Rotarian from the Petaluma Valley Rotary Club.
LOU STEINBERG introduced his little brother Mark as his guest. PRESIDENT TOM welcomed Lou back and the club followed with applause as we were all glad to have Lou back with us.
SUNSHINE REPORT: LOU said he was feeling better and hoped to attend future meetings. BARNEY FAUSS reported that DAVE AMUNDSEN was recovering at home and doing well.
The only Rotarian present born in the month of August was PAT SCHAEFER. PAT was fined $10.00 for not sitting at the birthday table and BARNEY lead the club in singing Happy Birthday to her.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
PRESIDENT TOM asked that each Rotarian check the Rota-Teller and the Rotary web roster to verify that their personal information was correct. Please contact STEVE OLMSTED for corrections to the (printed) Rota-Teller and webmaster AL CATTALINI for corrections on the web site.
STEVE POWELL said there was still time to sign up for the cruse on September 21-23 from Vancouver to San Francisco. For details contact Tina at Sonoma Travel Service 763-1545. Information is also on the club website.
DON RAMATICI reported that his grandson Andy Samuelson has entered the state of Colorado. Complete updates may be found on the web at http://www.biketripforals.com/.
FINES:
SHERRY BURWEN gladly paid a fine for losing three rotary pins. She thinks the last might have been taken at the de Young Museum in S.F during a local outing.
JANE SALDAÑA-TALLEY offered a fine for being unable to stay for today’s speaker program even though the speakers were from SRJC. Business responsibilities prevented her from staying. She missed a Great Program.
DON RAMATICI paid a fine for having KIP HERZOG’s vehicle insurance forms mailed to HERB BUNDENSEN. Don insisted that he should not be fined as Herb could have given the forms to Kip and prevented the whole issue from being exposed.
WALLY BRAGDON was accused by PRESIDENT TOM of losing something at the Golf Tournament. WALLY said he was not missing anything. PRESIDENT TOM then showed WALLY a hat. Wally said that’s not my hat and I’ll take the four way test to prove it. A stunned PRESIDENT TOM then asked if anyone knew who’s hat it was.
At that point NIT ANDERSON said it was her hat. TOM looked puzzled as the hat was found in an unusual place.
When asked by the editor as to what TOM wanted reported PRESIDENT TOM said “just report that it was found by the President.” Both NIT and WALLY were fined.
A shaken PRESIDENT TOM then called on BILL GROVERMAN and asked BILL if he had a checkbook belonging to JIM BECKER. BILL responded that he did not have Jim’s checkbook. PRESIDENT TOM said he would check with JIM and that his information sources must have gotten things mixed up. BILL, feeling sorry for PRESIDENT TOM, then offered to pay a fine for a wonderful outing with his family.
Heads up, Lee!
The raffle was held and BILL GROVERMAN had the winning ticket. BILL was rewarded with a bottle of wine for his efforts.
WALLY BRAGDON welcomed today’s speakers from SRJC.
WALLY introduced Jim Forkum, SRJC Athletic Director. Jim told of his past experiences in sports and his current responsibilities at SRJC. Jim informed us that currently the JC has over 20 sports programs with 530 athletes. He went on to explain the benefits of athletic programs especially at Junior Colleges.
Jim was followed by SRJC Swimming coach Jill McCormick who outlined the various swimming programs at the JC. Jill coaches the men’s water polo team which is ranked nationally. She recapped her experiences and introduced a recent SRJC graduate who is now attending UCSB. He told how the swimming program at the JC encouraged him to further his education.
This week's Rota-Teller editor: Ralph Sartori.

PRESIDENT TOM BRANDAL rang the bell, introduced himself, welcomed everyone, and then led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.
TED ADKINS skipped the “I’m a Rambler” lead-in and launched immediately into God Bless America.
DON RAMATICI was up next and, as his Thought for the Day, gave a beautiful eulogy for Bob Acorne, President of our Club in 1964-64, who passed away recently.
GAIL CARDAROPOLI got socked in the eye by the microphone when she tried to introduce the visiting Rotarians. Next time, Gail, lower the mike first!
Sunshine reporter AL KAPLAN reported that LOU STEINBERG is slowly building up his strength at home. He asked members to volunteer to spend a day with Lou who is a bit weak and at risk for falls.
PDG ED FULLERTON held up a long sheet of paper.
ONITA PELLEGRINI praised the Always . . . Patsy Cline performance now featured at the Petaluma Summer Music Festival.

DON RAMATICI announced that his grandson, Andy Samuelson, had made it to Cedar City, Utah on his bike ride from Petaluma to New York City. Be sure to read Andy’s blog at http://www.biketripforals.com/. Don announced that he’d be meeting Andy in the Big Apple and paid a fine for being such a proud grandfather.
DAVID SOLO discussed the good that comes from Paul Harris Fellowships and invited ONITA PELLEGRINI up to pin Paul Harris pins on two members who earned their second Paul Harris.
Here they are, KIP HERZOG and DAVID BARBIERI.
Poor DAVID! Mere seconds after being honored for his Paul Harris contributions, he’s fined for his recent vacation with children and grandchildren. It sounds like the vacation was a memorable experience: hospitalizations, car trouble, rattlesnake bites, a plague of locusts, a lost child, food poisoning, bee stings, heavy rain, a flooded campsite, a leaking canoe, and a shortage of wine.
DAN LIBARLE didn’t look very happy when he was fined for getting a birdie on the Tournament hole flying the Lace House Linen flag. (Note the free plug.) And note that Lace House Linen is spelled correctly. Not like the flag that WILL SOPER provided.
WILL SOPER didn’t seem to have an explanation of why the flag was misspelled or why the replacement flag was also misspelled.
CLARK ROSEN won the raffle, pulled the proper rock, won $125, and promptly donated it to the Rotary Foundation. Then he strode to the podium to introduce our speaker.
Hans Beerbaum is a collector of military weapons, uniforms, vehicles and other equipment. He’s parlayed his collection into the outfitting of movie productions and is now is working on producing his own movie. There’s a lot more information on his website www.kannonking.com.

PRESIDENT TOM BRANDAL started off the meeting with The Pledge of Allegiance and BARNEY FAUSS sang God Bless America.
BARNEY also noted that the American flag should always fly higher than other flags and on the Club’s head table, the Norwegian flag was flying highest. BARNEY quickly put the Stars and Stripes back in her rightful position.
SHERRY BERWEN gave the Thought for the Day and told the audience how proud she felt to be an American. We are all very fortunate to live in this great land and we should appreciate this opportunity. Don’t take anything for granted and hug your kids everyday.

CHRIS ALBERTSON won the raffle and walked away with a bottle of wine.
BRIDGET DOHERTY introduced our speaker, Colin Turek, who gave a great talk on longevity and nutrition. He encouraged us to maximize our longevity by doing simple things everyday – don’t go on radical diets, eat sensibly. You don’t have to train for a marathon, but try to get your heart rate up a few times a week. Relieve Stress as much as possible. Stress is a major contributor to many diseases and simple reduction will go a long way to keeping you healthy.
Thank you, Colin, for a great presentation.
P.S. As of this writing, the Golf Tournament was played on Monday and a great time was had by all members and guests. Thank you to all the organizers for a great day.
