May 14 - Club dark; attend the District Conference!
May 21 - An interesting program
May 28 - Another interesting program
Two more months! PRESIDENT RALPH opened the last meeting of April by observing that his year-long presidency was nearing its end. May, June, and it’s over!
He invited visiting Petaluma Valley Rotary President Jim O’Grady to lead the Pledge of Allegiance.
BARNEY FAUSS was up next, leading the crowd in God Bless America.
Then came MICHAEL CARUANA with a Thought for the Day in verse! His tale of the jester and the king presented some good lessons: Don’t underestimate others — and meet and get to know strangers.
WALLY BRAGDON introduced the local Boy Scout leadership contingent who renewed our charter as a sponsor. We’ve been sponsoring Troop 8 and Pack 8 for 64 years!
Our recent speaker, Larry Peter of Petaluma Creamery, attended as a guest today. PRESIDENT RALPH bought his lunch ticket but Larry graciously brought along his local ice cream (dessert) and cheese (raffle prize). Thanks, Larry!
SUNSHINE REPORTS

Remember, we’ll be dark on May 14 so you can attend the District Conference which is right here at the Petaluma Sheraton.
Jimmy O’Grady, son of flag pledger Jim O’Grady, thanked our Club for its support of his bicycle event which raised over $900 for Polio Plus. He presented PRESIDENT RALPH a check for $438 which our Club will forward on to the Polio Plus team. Jimmy didn’t leave lunch empty-handed. PRESIDENT RALPH presented him with an In-n-Out Burger gift card. Note that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will be matching our contribution. In fact, they’ve pledged another $255 million to Rotary's effort to eradicate polio.
PRESIDENT RALPH announced that invitations to the May 31 thank-you dinner for the winning raffle team are in the mail. He alerted attendees that the time might be adjusted to accommodate the memorial service for John Strong.
Birthday greetings were in store for PAT CONKLIN and JOHN DADO, both of whom were sitting at the birthday table and escaped with $5 fines.
A letter was received from the North Bay Dairywomen thanking the Club for our contribution to their scholarship fund.
Those $5 birthday fines were it. There were no more fines as PRESIDENT RALPH moved right on to the raffle.
JOANNE FERRIS was the lucky winner, getting not only a bottle of wine but also some great Petaluma Creamery cheese.
Babe Amaral denied that the earring in our lost-and-found department was his, but was socked $5 for failing to rise when speaking to the President.

Jerry was a great man who always gave his time and effort to help our club and the community. His smile and spirit will be missed.
PAST PRESIDENT LOU STEINBERG recited the Pledge of Allegiance, but not before reminding us how to say it properly – it’s a West Coast thing, Lou.
Mr. HERB BUNDESEN sang “God Bless America” and DAVE AMUNDSEN gave us the Thought for the Day – “bullshit may help you get to the top, but it won’t help you stay at the top”. Very nice, Dave.
TOM BAKER announced the visiting Rotarians and MICHAEL CARUANA and KATHY O”CONNOR each brought a guest. JOHN DADO is recovering from knee surgery and is not allowed to drive – so if anyone sees him behind the wheel, please alert PRESIDENT RALPH asap. BANO CUMMINGS is continuing treatment and hopes to visit us soon. We wish all ailing members speedy recoveries.
TED ADKINS said some kind words about Jerry Gillespie. The family will hold a celebration of his life on May 3 at 1 p.m. at the Burton Avenue Recreation Center, 7421 Burton Ave. in Rohnert Park.
The Club All Day Breakfast is on May 7. Everyone should have received their work schedule. Please contact the committee chairs if you have a conflict and SELL SOME TICKETS!

The Rotary District Conference will be held in Petaluma from May 14 -17. The Club website has all the information – there will be a golf tournament, seminars, meals and entertainment for all.
PAST PRESIDENT LOU STEINBERG wore his Jackie Robinson jersey in honor of #42 and he reminded us of the upcoming RYLA Camp on June 23. He asked all members who have not participated in this event to give it serious consideration. The students really appreciate the Club’s involvement and members will enjoy the interaction with the students. Please contact LEE REPOSA or JOANNE FERRIS for more info.
The dinner honoring the top SuperRaffle team will take place on May 31. Details to follow.

MARCUS BENEDETTI was next – he paid $50 for a coat left by one of his guests at Farmer’s Night.
WALLY BRAGDON added $30 to the till for just being a nice guy – no offense, no newspaper articles. Wally paid the money for just being Wally.
A guest won the raffle and walked off with our $225!
Larry Peter from the Petaluma Creamery was our speaker and he gave a terrific talk on his company’s activities – past present and future.
Thank you, Larry, for your enthusiastic and entertaining talk. Have a great day!

April 16 - Larry Peters - The Petaluma Creamery
April 23 - John Del'Osso - Point Reyes National Seashore - "Bedrock Values of National Parks"
April 30 - Katherine Rinehart - "The Petaluma Museum and how you can use its resources"
May 7 - All Day Breakfast
President RALPH SARTORI (sans tie and looking suspiciously disheveled) opened the meeting on the appointed half-hour after scurrying back to town in a hurry from Ripon.
He immediately had FRED WULFF lead us in the Pledge, followed by rousing renditions of Gypo and God Bless America by our little old songmeister, BARNEY FAUSS.
The Thought for the Day was then delivered by JUDI ALLEWELT, and the customary handshakes, hugs and kisses amongst members ensued.
After Visiting Rotarians were welcomed by GAIL CARDAROPOLI, the guests of Rotarians, including District Governor ED FULLERTON's wife, Carol, were introduced.
CLARK ROSEN gave the Sunshine Report and informed us that ROY MUSICK was on the mend (after a stint @ PVH to update his pacemaker), and JOHN DADO was up and kicking after knee replacement surgery. A moment of silence was then observed on the passing of JERRY GILLESPIE – he was an extremely active, effective member who will be missed by all of us. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
Ripon RALPH then ripped through the following announcements:
JAY PALM then announced the 2nd Annual Texas Hold 'Em Tournament (complete with prime rib dinner) – call Jay for details if you're feeling lucky!
The Prez then fined your editor $10 for daring to ask for a clarification!
MICHAEL CARUANA concluded the medley of announcements by reminding us that he and "LAWRENCE of Petaluma" (aka Indiana JONAS) were co-hosting the 2nd annual Petaluma Equestrian and Art Festival on July 19 this year – call Michael for details.
The beleaguered Prez then started rippin’ on his brethren as he summarily fined each past-president $1 for not sitting at the speaker's table.
He then took a $100 bite out of FRED WULFF for restoring cars (the latest being a '62 190SL Mercedes) and hanging out in Hawaii.
JANE SALDAÑA-TALLEY was then assessed $10 for her dilatory editorial approach to the Rota-Teller (apparently a bulletin delayed is a bulletin denied!).
SHERRY BURWEN then "confessed" to having 2 great sons (Michael and Daniel) who are both doing well, and proceeded to contribute $25 towards her Paul Henris.
LEE REPOSA was then fined $25 for being a banker (remember when they were held in higher esteem than used car salesmen and ...gulp... attorneys??). A visiting Rotarian then won the Raffle – fortunately (for us) no $$, just wine!
After reminding us about next week's program (Larry Peters on "What's New" at the Petaluma Creamery), the Prez introduced our own DAVID SOLO who gave a very informative presentation on the Petaluma Boys & Girls Club, including its history in Petaluma, and positive effect and influence nationwide. A book will be donated in David's name to a local high school library for a program well received.
With that, the Prez, who was obviously anxious to get slippin’ back down to Ripon (for some sippin', grippin' and tippin', no doubt), adjourned the meeting.
See you next week... Let's just hope the Prez gets back in time!

This week's Rota-Teller editor: Mike Baddeley.
April 9 - David Solo -The Boys and Girls Clubs of Petaluma. " How they
operate, benefits to the community, future plans"
April 16 - The Petaluma Creamery
April 23 - John Del'Osso - Point Reyes National Seashore - "Bedrock Values of National Parks"
April 30 - Katherine Rinehart - "The Petaluma Museum and how you can use its resources"
On the first Thursday in April we met in the Vets Building. The day was cool and windy with bright blue skies. The lunch was an excellent assortment of fruit, salad, veggies, penne pasta, chicken, and (of course) those wonderful cookies.
PRESIDENT RALPH SARTORI called the meeting to order. AL CATTALINI, accompanied by Captain Christopher Hall, USCG, led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance.
HERB BUNDESEN led us in a ‘first string’ rendition of “God Bless America” (doing a pretty fine job “for a guy who went to Cal Poly”, to quote PRESIDENT RALPH).
JOANNE FERRIS gave us her thought for the day…a gentle reminder to put down our burdens and “rest for a while.”
After club greetings, STEVE HOOD introduced visiting Rotarians, and AL CATTALINI, KATHY O’CONNOR, and DAVE AMUNDSEN all introduced their guests. DAVE AMUNDSEN’s guest was Sal Gonzalez, a Petaluma High School Interact Club member who told club members he had received a silver medal for architecture in the Skills USA competition and was looking for sponsors to help him with the money needed to get him to the state competition in Fresno.
PRESIDENT RALPH generously came through on the spot with Club funds for the entire amount (travel expenses to the competition in Fresno: $350 . . .
. . . the look of amazement on Sal’s face: priceless!!). Good going PRESIDENT RALPH!
Sunshine reports came from RICK MOSSI regarding Jerry Gillespie, from WALLY BRAGDON regarding ROY MUSICK’s pacemaker surgery, . . .
. . . from TOM BRANDAL regarding JOHN DADO’s knee surgery, and from JUDI ALLEWELT regarding Sharon Dado’s ankle.
PRESIDENT RALPH announced April anniversaries and reminded members to “do something nice” for their spouses. PRESIDENT RALPH reminded members that the All Day Breakfast is Thursday, May 7 and asked that we check the schedules posted on the Club website.
PRESIDENT RALPH also announced the District Assembly in Fortuna and the District Conference at the Petaluma Sheraton, May 14-17. He told members the Club would be dark on May 14 and suggested that a good makeup would be to attend all or some of the District Conference (also a great way to show our support of our very own DISTRICT GOVERNOR ED FULLERTON!).
GAIL CARDAROPOLI announced the Sunrise Rotary’s 4th Annual Easter Egg Hunt at Lucchesi Park. PRESIDENT RALPH stood in for LEROY BEAN to announce the upcoming golf tournament.
Immediate Past President LOU STEINBERG told us he had just returned from a trip to North Carolina where he did a makeup and so brought back a club flag for our display. PRESIDENT RALPH mentioned the three Petaluma area Rotary Clubs will be working on a float for the Butter and Eggs Day parade.
PRESIDENT RALPH announced that $12,000 is available for a dollar for dollar match to help members toward their Paul Harris Fellowships…members should check with DAVID SOLO or PRESIDENT RALPH for more information. PRESIDENT RALPH told us the top raffle ticket sales team would be treated to a wine tasting and great food on a ranch that used to belong to PRESIDENT RALPH’s grandfather.
PRESIDENT RALPH re-introduced Captain Christopher Hall, Commanding Officer of the US Coast Guard Base, and presented him with a $783.75 check for the luncheon and club meeting on the base. Captain Hall thanked Club members for their loyal support and told us the money would go toward the ‘morale fund’. He also expressed his appreciation for the way members helped “raise money at the bar” on that day!
PRESIDENT RALPH started off the ‘fine’ part of the meeting by calling on BRIDGET DOHERTY who was recently honored by the North Bay Business Journal as one the year’s top “40 Under 40”…way to go, Bridget!
PRESIDENT RALPH pulled out the most recent edition of the Chamber’s “Petaluma Business” (that he apparently got during a stop at the bank), and told us he had struck ‘fine schedule’ gold!
JIM BECKER was on the front page (he’s running for the Chamber Board, but managed to avoid a fine);
PAT SCHAEFER was on page 2 (seems she’s involved with the Ambassador Committee, but she wasn’t lucky enough to avoid a fine);
BRIAN BREEN was on page 3 (but he wasn’t at the meeting, so avoided a fine); and last (but not least) DAN LIBARLE was fined for his appearance in this notorious tabloid. All PRESIDENT RALPH could say was, “What a great paper! Onita…you’re to be congratulated!”
Finally, PRESIDENT RALPH fined soft-hearted RICK MOSSI for giving away the President’s badge to Colleen Mahoney during the recent Achievement Awards honoring Herold Mahoney. Seems PRESIDENT RALPH had loaned Rick the badge and was shocked when it appeared on someone else’s lapel!
KATHY O’CONNOR’s guest won the drawing and a bottle of wine.
This week’s speaker was our very own JAY PALM who gave a touching and fascinating talk on how he became an expert braider under the guidance of his grandfather and the world-famous artist, Luis Ortega. He brought beautiful examples of their work and showed us a side of him few of us ever knew. Thanks, Jay! You were great!
PRESIDENT RALPH closed the meeting by announcing next week’s speaker as DAVID SOLO who would be sharing information about the Boy’s and Girl’s Club. Don’t miss it!
