LEE REPOSA pledges; TED ADKINS sings.

PRESIDENT RALPH SARTORI began the meeting with the traditional “Pledge of Allegiance” and “God Bless America”.

DAVE AMUNDSEN gave the Thought for the Day and explained the virtue of long-term enthusiasm and commitment – small acts are good, but the most important acts are measured through the course of one’s lifetime.

After a longer than usual meet-and-greet, the meeting resumed and MIKE BADDELEY introduced visiting Rotarians and PRESIDENT RALPH SARTORI reported that JIM McCAFRREY is recuperating well at home after a brief stint in the hospital. BEST WISHES JIM.

Club Notes:
Thursday, January 29 is Sonoma County Association of Rotary Clubs Dinner at Mister McGoo’s in Petaluma. We are the host and participation is greatly encouraged. Consult the club website for details.

This Thursday (29th) we will be dark and the meeting will be FRIDAY the 30th at the Coast Guard Training Center. Please go to the club website for all the necessary information. This is an annual tradition and never disappoints. Great thanks to AL CATTALINI for all his efforts.

CRAB FEED tickets are on sale now: contact JAMES BURLESON or RICHARD MARZO for details. Tickets are $45 and the event is filling up fast.

Sell those raffle tickets!

Birthday wishes for January included BABE AMARAL, PAUL LOUNIBOS, MARY ANN SHOEMAKER, JOANNE FERRIS, AL RICHARDS, and LEROY BEAN.

The Fine Can made its weekly appearance and SHERRY BURWEN and TOM BRANDAL each kicked in a few bucks from their winnings at The Day at the Races.

WILL SOPER donated $100 for recent trips to Hawaii and Mexico and his swanky new Mercedes Benz.

JOANNE FERRIS was down $25 for appearing in the newspaper (although in her defense, it wasn’t in the “police blotter” section this time).

BRIDGET DOHERTY won the raffle and pulled out the brown rock for $25. Huge win!

Paul Lounibos introduced our speaker.

Our Speaker was Sounty County Clerk-Recorder-Assessor, Janice Atkinson. She gave a great presentation on the election and voting process in Sonoma County. This past election, our county had the highest turn-out in the state – 93%. They clearly are doing things right in Janice’s office and we appreciate all their hard work. Thank you for a job well done.

See you all on Thursday night at McGoo’s and Friday lunch at the Coast Guard Training Center.

PRESIDENT RALPH SARTORI got things underway and asked FRED WULFF to give The Pledge of Allegiance . . .

. . . and BARNEY FAUSS lead us in “God Bless America”. TED ADKINS gave a great Thought for the Day - DON’T “Have a good day”, MAKE a good day.

NIT ANDERSON brought her husband, Bob. JOHN DADO is (by this letter’s writing) recuperating well from his recent illness and he enjoyed a great outing at the Day at the Races.

RICARDO MARZO gave the scoop on Crab Feed tickets.

WALLY BRAGDON reported on the Super-Raffle – SELL, SELL, SELL!

The Club will be dark on Thursday, January 29 and the weekly meeting will be held at the Coast Guard facility on Friday, January 30. For details, go to the Club website and click on “Club Calendar”.

PRESIDENT RALPH SARTORI congratulated PAST PRESIDENT TAWNY TESCONI for her leadership with this year’s Dictionary Program. She has helped continue the tradition started by Rotarian Harvey Freetley and this year approx. 40,000 dictionaries were distributed throughout our district. He also recognized PAT CONKLIN for her help.

JIM BECKER reported to the membership about his recent attendance of a Board Meeting and thanked PRESIDENT RALPH for his hard work and leadership (NOTE: all members are welcomed to attend Board Meetings).

The Fine Can made its weekly appearance and BRIAN BREEN was the first make a donation for $50 for his recent home improvements (and dealing with City Hall).

JOANNE FERRIS added $25 for failing to follow basic driving principals – like stopping when you see that red and white octagon.

DAVID SOLO also donated $25 for his recent modeling job for Club One.

PRESIDENT RALPH SARTORI auctioned off a yearly parking pass to the SRJC –Petaluma Campus and AL KAPLAN happily offered $50 for the privilege to park alongside college students.

DAVID SOLO re-appeared to claim the winning raffle number and drew the brown rock – winning $275.00. Being the gentleman that he is, David gave his winnings to the club to be split evenly between Local and International Projects. Thanks, David.

JOANNE FERRIS introduced our speaker, Barbara Mello-Streckfus, who is a professional organizer. Barbara gave a great talk on identifying the need to purge one’s belongings and create new “SPACE”:

        Sort and empty
        Purge and divide into categories
        Assign to a new place
        Contain and organize
        Enjoy!

Thank you, Barbara, for a fun presentation.

God Bless to all.

Drop some bucks in this can next week for the Girl Scout "gift of caring" program that provides cookies for military personnel serving overseas.

COMING EVENTS

January 15 - Professional Organizer Barbara Streckfus
January 16 - Rotary Day at the Races
January 22 - Janice Atkinson - Sonoma County Clerk/Recorder/Assessor
January 30 - Club meets at Coast Guard Training Center (replaces January 29 meeting)

President, RALPH SARTORI, opened the inaugural meeting of 2009 on the appointed half-hour, . . .

. . . and had WHITNEY HALL lead us in the Pledge.

Past-President BARNEY FAUSS, after giving an unsolicited recitation of military title hierarchy, led us in song (A Gypo from Pelican Bay and God Bless America).

JUDI ALLEWELT then delivered a humorous Thought for the Day, followed by . . .

. . . the customary handshakes, hugs and busses among members.

BRIAN BREEN introduced the visiting Rotarians, followed by an acknowledgment of the guests of Rotarians who joined us for lunch.

In an unusual Sunshine Report, Past-Presidents JOHN DADO and KIP HERZOG each gave their own health report status: both are feeling fine and doing great! The Prez then congratulated all the members with January wedding anniversaries.

RICARDO MARZO reminded everyone of the Club's annual Crab Feed event, scheduled for February 20… $45.00 per person gets you all the crab you can eat, so contact Ricardo to get your tickets while they last!

RICK MOSSI then gave a report on the Crab Feed Super Raffle Tickets – they've been duly distributed by the assigned team leaders to all of the members, so sell, sell, sell!!

The Prez then waxed philosophical and fiscally (but not necessarily grammatically, according to Ricardo!) about the state of the economy, the Club, and other matters of general interest and concern on matters monetary. Basically, there's no such thing as "quick easy cash", . . .

. . . unless of course you join in the upcoming annual Rotary Day at the Races on Friday, January 16 to play the ponies – call JOHN DADO if you want to attend and win back all the $$ you lost in the stock market! AL CATTALINI then reminded one and all that our Club's annual Coast Guard base luncheon is scheduled for Friday, January 30, commencing at 01100 (11:00 a.m. in military speak, right Barney ?) – security is tight (fortunately), so make sure you bring the appropriate picture ID and that your vehicle is properly registered/licensed /insured (call Captain Al for details). The Prez then announced that our Club is hosting the monthly SCARS meeting at Mr. McGoos the last week of this month – call Ralph or Secretary STEVE OLMSTED if you would like to attend.

Past-President ONITA PELLEGRINI, the senior member of the Club's President Nomination Committee, announced the nomination of CLARK ROSEN as our President-Elect Nominee and moved that he be accepted as such by the Club. The motion was duly seconded and unanimously approved by the members, so congratulations, Clark!

Apparently wanting to show the President-Elect Nominee how an old pro raises $$ for the Club, Prez Ralph went on a fining spree like a wall street broker looking for a bailout: first, he fined TOM BAKER $15 for breaching the very cell phone etiquette rule that Tom wrote ("Can you hear me now?"); . . .

. . . then he fined WILL SOPER, WALLY BRAGDON, GARY BRODIE, and Past-President TED ADKINS $5 each for winning gift baskets filled with wine, cheese and other goodies (which all exceeded the stated expiration dates, according to Will); . . .

. . . next, he fined all of the past-presidents of the Club who weren't wearing their Club badges $5 each (a gotcha moment for BABE AMARAL, DAN LIBARLE and ONITA PELLEGRINI); . . .

. . . and last, but not least, he fined Past-President DON RAMATICI $100 (to be donated to the John Ramatici Scholarship Fund) for a great newspaper article on Don's grandson (John's son), Jake.

Ticket #515 proved to be the winning raffle ticket for ... surprise, surprise... the Prez (begging the question, I suppose, as to just what is the statistical probability of the same person wining a random drawing every other week out of 50+ participants? I wonder if the odds increase or decrease if the “lucky” winner controls the drawing??). The gracious, albeit quite chagrined, Prez won the gourmet butter and donated it . . .

. . . to WILL SOPER (never hurts to "butter up" the Club accountant, right?).

The Prez himself then introduced our speaker, his brother-in-law (and oenophile par excellence) Rich Thomas, who gave us a very educational and humorous presentation on wine. Rich received a Rotary memento and a book was donated in his name to the PHS library for a program well received.

Whereupon, the meeting was adjourned, and so it came to pass, the first meeting of the Rotary Club of Petaluma in the year Two Thousand and Nine.

See you next week.
