"I'm Lou Steinberg, President . . . ."
HERB BUNDESEN opened the last meeting of February with a stirring God Bless America.
After ROBERT MITCHELL deferred to a surprised JIM BECKER, Jim delivered his Thought for the Day, an appreciation of the blessings of Rotary.
AL KAPLAN introduced our one visiting Rotarian who had traveled up the highway from Novato. There were no non-Rotarian guests so PRESIDENT LOU moved quickly to the birthday table. It seems that February is a bumper month for Rotarian birthdays. Sitting at the table and paying $5 fines were TED ADKINS, AL KAPLAN, PRESIDENT LOU, BRIAN BREEN, STEVE OLMSTED, ALDEN HENNINGS, and AL CATTALINI.
Next, ED FULLERTON rose to announce upcoming Rotary events:
MICHAEL CARUANA chaired a recent Fireside Chat for new members, hosted at the home of ED and Carol FULLERTON. Michael said he filled in for ONITA PELLEGRINI who broke her foot while skydiving.
BRIAN BREEN commented that he enjoyed the wine, the food, . . . everything.
STEVE HOOD was up next and asked if he was a visiting Rotarian. Steve explained that, as a police officer, he was extremely busy and had some difficulty making it to Thursday luncheons. He commented that he should have been a firefighter, since they just sit around all day. Just then a fire broke out at the end of the buffet table. Poulet flambé?
Well, it seems that Steve was right for it was our undertaker, not our fire chief, who grabbed the extinguisher and put out the fire. After JAMES GOTELLI doused the flames . . .
. . . CHRIS ALBERTSON rose from his luncheon repast and strode to the scene.
Determining that the danger was past, he returned to his lunch.
How do you follow an act like that? Invite ANDY KVALHEIM to the podium to rebut ERIK GUNHEIM’s suggestion (see last week’s Rota-Teller) that Andy looked like a kewpie doll.
Well, you can make your own judgment but we think that Andy wins the good looks contest hands down!
Next it was time for BABE AMARAL to explain a photo that had mysteriously come into PRESIDENT LOU’s possession.
It was a scene straight out of Brokeback Mountain and involved a former member of our club who shall remain nameless. While Babe’s attempt at an explanation can’t be repeated here, he did offer a $50 fine to our local foundation to make the matter go away.
Just back from a visit to New Zealand, JIM BECKER presented a banner from the Rotary Club of Queenstown. After describing the thrill of paragliding “with a little Venezuelan clinging on my back — the national champion of Paraguay” he offered a dollar-a-pound fine ($50) representing the 30 pounds lost by PRESIDENT LOU and the 20 pounds gained by Jim.
MICHAEL CARUANA won the raffle and took home a bottle of wine. Next week the cash prize will be $75.
DAVID SOLO introduced the program.
Greg Sabourin of the Petaluma Small Craft Center Coalition, assisted by Susan Starbird, described ongoing efforts to establish a small craft center on the Petaluma riverfront.

It was a dark and cold day at Petaluma Rotary.
But things got much brighter and warmer once inside.
In an effort to boost attendance, our club banner is modified to read-- come to Petaluma Rotary Club.
Andy looked cute as a kewpie doll as he led us in song.
Larry gave the thought for the day.
Geoff introduced visiting Rotarian Tom Campbell.
The usual handshakes...
and hugs followed.
Guests included the parents and sister of our guest speaker.
Ted had son Clay as his guest.
Robert gave an update on international projects and a planned fund raiser to occur this July.
Larry gave a quick report on our recent work done at the Mexican orphanage.
Mary Ann was renamed Joanne by President Lou.
Then it was time for fines.
Babe was back and gave fifty bucks...
which, they say, is about the number of bucks he was with while sleeping off a wild night in the deer enclosure at San Francisco Zoo.
John ratted on Tom.
Tom tried to explain why he missed the crab feed.
Bridget showed us some of the showgirl moves she learned while in Las Vegas.
Will had the winning raffle ticket and...
walked away with a bottle of wine.
Joanne introduced our guest speaker...
Kevin Lunny, who gave us a very interesting talk on local oyster farming.

Judi Allewelt greets arriving Rotarians and guests.
Lady Rotarians were welcomed to today’s meeting by PRESIDENT LOU and his wife Julie who presented Red Roses to all the Ladies in honor of Valentines Day. The tables also had candy treats for all to enjoy. Thanks PRESIDENT LOU and Julie.
With gavel in hand PRESIDENT LOU rang the Rotary Bell and called the meeting to order. TED ADKINS was our song leader and started out with “I’m A Rambler, I’m A Gambler” and finished with “God Bless America.”
PRESIDENT LOU then asked us all to greet one another which was done with hugs, handshakes and kind words. OOPS!! What about The Thought For The Day? Seems PRESIDENT LOU had a lot on his mind and forgot to call on ROBERT MITCHELL. Robert gave an inspiring talk on Valentines Day and how it is associated with Love. We should all remember “LOVE CURES PEOPLE, BOTH THOSE WHO GIVE AND THOSE WHO RECEIVE”.
Rotarians with guests included: JANE SALDAÑA-TALLEY. AL CATTALINI, FRED WULFF, DAVID SOLO, SHERRI BURWEN, and PRESIDENT LOU.
PRESIDENT LOU announced Rotarians with Wedding Anniversaries in February: JOANNE FERRIS, PAT SCHAEFER, BILL LANE and LORETTA CATAROZOLI.
BRIAN BREEN introduced the lone visiting Rotarian from the Petaluma Sunrise Club.

The Veterans Memorial was beautifully decorated in Valentines and Crab motifs and set the tone for a wonderful community event.
After a traditionally long cocktail hour(s), PRESIDENT LOU STEINBERG welcomed the audience and we all recited the Pledge of Allegiance. There were nearly 500 attendees and they quickly went to work on the plethora of crab and salad at their tables.
Led by Co-Chairs STEVE HENRIS and JAMES BURLESON (and by Chairman Emeritus DAN LIBARLE), . . .
. . . the Crab Feed crew prepared the wonderful dinner all afternoon and helped organize another successful feed.
Behind every chairman is an army of willing Rotarians who really make the wheel run smoothly. DON RAMATICI, RICK SUSICK, KIP HERZOG, RALPH PELTON, CHRIS ALBERTSON and GRETA VIGUE were among the many volunteers who gave their time and effort. Over 1500 pounds of crab were served and probably just as many drink tickets were sold. The bars were well attended and the same-day Super Raffle ticket sales were strong. This event is tremendously successful not only in terms of funds raised, but it also serves as a community reminder for the good work our Rotary Club performs and our desire to serve Petaluma.
Although we will have to wait until this Thursday to find out which team won the Super Raffle, there is already a clear individual winner: JOANNE FERRIS won the grand prize of the Super Raffle – netting $8000 and, hopefully, a steep fine from PRESIDENT LOU STEINBERG. Thank you to all the volunteers
