July 6 - 20/20 . . . 20 members each speaking 1 minute on Rotary . . . A wild time!
July 13 - Lou Steinberg and RYLA students reporting on a successful RYLA Week – CD & Video
July 16 - International Committee Picnic, Two Rock
July 20 - District Governor Erna Stevenson visits

The Debunking of PRESIDENT LEROY BEAN was a wonderful evening. The Petaluma Golf and Country Club was beautifully decorated by Carole Libarle, Sharon Dado, JEANNETTE CLARK and JOANNE FERRIS. The CAL theme with blue and gold filled the room. Even the catering staff honored the PREZ with CAL shirts.

PRESIDENT LEE brought the crowd to order by bring up BARNIE FAUSS to lead us in a jolly rendition of “I’m a Rambler” followed by an enthusiastic “God Bless America”.

LARRY GOTFREDSON gave the invocation. HE thanked the Lord for LEE’s recovery from heart surgery and the huge support of his wife, Oralee. HE also wished TAWNY only the best in her upcoming year. The usual kisses, hugs and handshakes quickly followed.

We then began feasting on a fabulous meal served family style. The Caesar salad, pot roast with potatoes and carrots, chicken picatta, fresh green beans, penne pasta Alfredo and a brownie sundae for desert was the best meal served in Petaluma. Thank you, Roger Offenbach. The tables were adorned with wine, a beautiful center piece and STEVE RUSTAD’S collection of toons highlighting the year of JUDGE ROY BEAN.

LEE introduced his special guests: Oralee, his two daughters, Cynthia and Shelly, his son-in-law, Jim and his two beautiful granddaughters, Chelsea and Jessica. The new District Governor, ERNA STEVENSON and Lee's special friends were also introduced.

LEE also paid special recognition to DAN LIBARLE for his work on the Crab Feed and TOM BAKER for his great job organizing the gift distribution for the kids at Christmas.

PRESIDENT LEE thanked each one of his board members and presented them with a gift.

Board member MICHAEL CARUANA was chosen as Rotarian of the Year. Congratulations, MICHAEL.

PAST PRESIDENT ONITA PELLEGRINI announced the latest group of Rotarians to join the Paul Harris Fellowship. The Fellowship was established in 1957 to honor the Rotary Foundation. Those programs include an array of projects that save and invigorate the lives of people around the world and enhance international friendship and understanding. Our Club appreciates the contributions of each member and gave them a warm applause as they were announced onto the stage.

PRESIDENT LEE gave special mention to Oralee. We all owe her a debt of gratitude for her role behind the scenes. HE thanked his debunking team, and HE couldn’t forget Kenton Clark for the use of his big black hat.

A special gift was given to his PAST PRESIDENT JEANNETTE CLARK for her support throughout the year. HE also had a heartfelt thank you to the Club. It takes many people to make a successful presidential year.

MICHAEL CARUANA was up next. The PREZ was escorted to his throne on stage and the show began.

The PREZ was a good sport as STEVE R., JEANNETTE, LORETTA, JOANNE and PAT dressed him in a “Crash Bean” motorcycle helmet,  . . .

           . . . a drum major hat,  . . .

           . . . a red wig,  . . .

Academic garb from Berkeley

           . . . an I.V. of merlot complete with gown  . . .

. . . and of course the Judge Bean Cowboy Hat. The crowd chuckled.

After the show, JEANNETTE presented LEROY with his gift from the Club. It was a Bose stereo system HE will truly enjoy.

It was now time for LEE to pass the key to the executive bathroom to TAWNY. (It was actually the key to the closet at the Vets.)

PRESIDENT TAWNY was officially on board. SHE thanked LEE and Oralee and introduced her board of directors. SHE hopes to have a great year while developing fellowship in the Club. She ended the evening by offering a reward for anyone who had any information on BABE’s plans for her first meeting. SHE knows he has it out for her.

This Week's Rotary Membership Moment

Now is the time to thank all those Club Membership Chairs and their committees for all the time and effort they have put into the membership process this past year. They have helped retain long- standing members and have brought new energy and ideas into the club by welcoming in new members. This has made your club stronger and able to put more in to the local and international community.

Job well done!

COMING EVENTS

June 29 - Dark today; Debunking tomorrow
June 30 - Debunking
July 6 – 20/20 20 members each speaking 1 minute on Rotary . . . A wild time!
July 13 - Lou Steinberg and RYLA students reporting on a successful RYLA Week – CD & Video
July 16 - International Committee Picnic, Two Rock
July 20 - District Governor Erna Stevenson visits

Wearing his black Stetson, borrowed for the year from Kenton Clark, JUDGE LEROY BEAN opened his last regular meeting of the Club year.

He called on BARNEY FAUSS to lead us in song,  . . .

. . . and then JAMES GOTELLI for our Thought for the Day. JAMES’ thoughtful words melded his appreciation of Rotary with the familiar MasterCard refrain, observing that the Rotary experience was priceless.

After the handshakes and hugs it was time to pose for the group photo that will appear in the Argus Courier special tribute to Rotary. Quickly back at our tables, our lone visiting Rotarian was introduced. He was Glen Johnson of Fairbanks, Alaska, a 1952 graduate of Petaluma High School.

CLARK ROSEN and GEOFF ELLIS introduced guests. CLARK brought the speaker’s sister while GEOFF had his dad, visiting from Connecticut.

PRESIDENT LEE announced that his promised financial report, describing all the good places our money went this year, was running late. He said to expect it in early July.

Some of the Club’s money went to fund scholarships and one of the award recipients was here to thank us. Kanta, a recent Casa Grande graduate, will be pursuing a career in nursing.

PRESIDENT LEE called RICARDO MARZO and STEVE RUSTAD to the podium to receive thank you awards.

RICARDO was recognized for work on the annual Salute to Rotary,  . . .

. . . while STEVE was recognized for his cartooning and, especially, for his graphic display about the Club website.

Waving a list of members, ONITA PELLEGRINI announced that there was still time to contribute to Paul Harris Fellowships. The Club will match your gift, dollar-for-dollar.

THE JUDGE then went after members who hadn’t met their fine schedule obligations during the past year. Incredibly, one of them was President-Elect TAWNY TESCONI who had been fined only $20 this year. With TAWNY off at the Fair,  . . .

. . . ONITA PELLEGRINI rose in her defense (?) and proposed that TAWNY be fined not the remaining $80, but rather a full $100. THE JUDGE concurred.

Then other fine stragglers, HERB BUNDESEN,  . . .

           . . . FRED FROST,  . . .

           . . . KEITH SOLTS  . . .

. . . and STEVE POWELL, were hit for $50 each. STEVE offered another $50, noting that today was his fifth anniversary.

TED ADKINS, winner of $450 in last week’s raffle, (and, he noted, a proud member since 1967) offered $50 to the Club so he can stop looking over his shoulder as he goes about town.

LARRY JONAS reminded members of the fun picnic at Two Rock Lake on Sunday, July 16. All proceeds go to our international activities.

JUDGE BEAN didn’t have a June birthday list but members sitting at the birthday table, JEANNETTE CLARK, ONITA PELLEGRINI, FRED FROST, STEVE POWELL, LARRY JONAS, and LARRY GOTFREDSON paid their $5 fines. So did CLARK ROSEN who was seated at the speaker’s table.

The raffle was for a mere $25 this week. Lucky WALLY BRAGDON didn’t get the cash, but walked off with a bottle of wine.

What’s the difference between a proctologist and a prostheticist? Thanks to this week’s Program Chair, CLARK ROSEN, we now know. He introduced local prostheticist,  . . .

. . . Drew Hittenberger, who presented an amazing overview of the wonders of modern prosthetics.

Concluding his last meeting at the Vets Building, PRESIDENT LEROY thanked the membership for their strong support during his presidency. The members responded, thanking Lee with a standing ovation.

See you at the Debunking!

This Week's Rotary Membership Moment

As said in week one, Rotary does not have a membership problem, it has an invitation opportunity. During the next year invite your family, friends, business and social acquaintances to your Rotary meetings and events. This is a great opportunity to educate them about all the good things Rotary has to offer; friendship, contacts, the opportunity to work on projects in the community and of course the internationality of Rotary.

Continue to think membership!

KEITH SOLTS offered a prayer for the day.

BRIDGET DOHERTY introduced visiting Rotarians,  . . .

. . . and LARRY JONAS drew our attention to the upcoming fund raiser picnic to benefit the international projects of the three Petaluma Rotary Clubs. The event will be held from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm on July 16 at Two Rock Lake, $25 for adults and $5 for kids.

JOANNE FERRIS reminded the club of president LEROY’s Debunking and Installation of TAWNY TESCONI as president on June 30. Information has been sent to each member. Be sure to respond as soon as possible.

President LEROY reminded us that a club photo will be taken next week for inclusion in the annual Argus Courier Rotary edition and urged everyone to attend.

ONITA PELLEGRINI reminded everyone that next week is the deadline for matching funds from the club for members to attain their initial or next Paul Harris level. Check with ONITA regarding your personal account.

President LEROY took the opportunity to thank several members who have made a significant contribution to his year.

RICK VAN BEBBER received the Silent Rotarian award for his duties with lunch ticket sales and Interact.

ROBERT MITCHELL and JIM BECKER were recognized as part of the International Committee and their work on the Guatemala Project.

ONITA PELLEGRINI was honored for her general presidential assistance, organization of Fireside Chats, and yeoman’s service in membership. Each honoree received a gift and a card.

President LEROY also recognized HARVEY FREETLY, who was honored as District Rotarian of the Year; (For a great photo of Harvey at the District Conference, click here.)  . . .

. . . AL CATTALINI, who was recognized by the District for his work on the club website; and DAVE AMUNDSEN, who has provided consistent set up assistance throughout the year.

MARK STOKES admitted to a Hawaii trip some time ago and paid $100 for moving his office to North McDowell.

AL KAPLAN announced his first wedding anniversary on June 25 and the graduation of two step daughters from high school, one going to the JC and the other to Gonzaga. In their honor, he presented a check for a Paul Harris award  . . .

. . . on behalf of his wife, TWINK. She wanted to know if she could wear it on her finger.

JEANNETTE CLARK looked mighty tan after a month in Hawaii. She shared her pride in 48 years of marriage and $50 with the club.

LARRY JONAS took the stage again due his upcoming 60th birthday, and president LEROY shared a card from one of LARRY’s former employees, who donated $100 to the club in honor of LARRY’s generosity.

But, it was TED ADKINS who stole the show, as he won the $450 raffle prize.

HENRY HANSEL introduced a very informative program by  . . .

. . . JIM JOHNSON, who started KFTY television channel 50. JIM showed an excellent video on the Great Santa Rosa Earthquake of April 18, 1906, funded by the Santa Rosa Rotary Club. (To view hundreds of photos from the Great Santa Rosa Earthquake of 1906 click here.)

The Argus-Courier will be taking our group photo on Thursday, June 22. Remember to arrive early and to bring your smile!

This Week's Rotary Membership Moment

As the Rotary year draws to a close thank your President and Board for a job well done. Just because they are leaders doesn’t mean that they don’t like to be recognized for all the time and effort put in during the past year. When Rotarians know they are appreciated they stay Rotarians. This is true for leaders also.

Just say thanks!

This Week's Rotary Membership Moment

Do you realize that Paul Harris our founder was the only Rotarian that was not invited to be a Rotarian? Every Rotarian has been invited to be a part of this organization.

Invite someone to join Rotary and give them a wonderful opportunity!

July 6 – President Tawny’s first meeting

There were cheers and applause when PRESIDENT LEE started the meeting by announcing he’d be President for just four more meetings, including this one.

Today’s songleader, RALPH SARTORI, was up first and immediately broke into the theme from Bonanza. . .

Eric Haas ("Hoss") Cartwright and Ralph ("Hoss") Sartori

. . . before launching us into a somewhat flat God Bless America. Maybe we all need some practice?

Ralph was followed by CHRIS ALBERTSON whose Thoughts for the (Election) Day were insightful observations about politicians.

There were no visiting Rotarians to introduce and HARVEY FREETLY brought the only guest, an acquaintance from Novato.

Sunshine Report. CONNIE HEIZER is recuperating slowly from surgery; her back is in a brace and she is unable to stand. Connie, we hope you are back on your feet soon!

President Elect TAWNY TESCONI had three announcements. (1) There’s still time to have the Club match your Paul Harris contribution if you hurry. (2) Be sure to submit your 2006-07 Committee forms right away. If you’ve misplaced yours, it’s available at the Club website. (3) The North of the Gate Wine Gala is at the Fairgrounds this Saturday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. All the fine wine and food you can consume for just $35!

PRESIDENT LEE urged members to purchase ads for the Argus Courier Salute to Rotary. The deadline is June 23. Click here or contact RICARDO MARZO or JEANNETTE CLARK for more information.

Self-proclaimed “old fart” BARNEY FAUSS gave his “oldie but goodie” craft talk. We learned of his upbringing in Iowa, his Navy flight school kamikaze training, his marriage to Alma, his varied careers, and his move to Petaluma in an unsuccessful attempt to escape alcohol.

FRED WULFF and ED FULLERTON demonstrated the folly of his move by delivering wine to the podium. With his thirst quenched, Barney elucidated on the life lessons he has learned. Briefly, they are friendships, religion, and Rotary camaraderie.

"Wrong anniversary? It's Greg Freitas' fault!"

Preparing for a retirement in Arizona, recently returned LARRY GOTFREDSON presented a banner from the Rotary Club of Sedona Red Rocks. His description of the multiple vortexes encountered there may explain what happened to BARNEY. Anyway, it cost Larry $10.

Things were pricier for BILL GROVERMAN. It seems he slept through our recent, Tawny-conducted meeting (in the parking lot, no less!) and won the trip to Italy raffled by the Chamber of Commerce. He paid $50 for all this.

HENRY HANSEL observed that PRESIDENT LEE had obviously grown in confidence during his tenure as demonstrated by his bravely offering the never-shy BARNEY the podium. Henry then confessed to having three tee times at Augusta National cancelled (he’s still waiting) and to the accomplishments of his daughter-in-law Alicia who was an All American water polo star at Berkeley and now coaches the sport at Sonoma State. These exploits cost Henry $100.

Looking jaunty in his Cal ballcap (try saying that quickly three times), RICK OBERLIN admitted to buying a Harley Davidson “to save gas.” He explained that he wouldn’t have “a dorky moped ; . . .

OK, who's dorky now?

. . . like LARRY JONAS." Rick proudly announced that his daughter had just finished her freshman year at Berkeley with a 4.0 GPA and had been admitted to Phi Beta Kappa. For all this he paid $100.

Today’s raffle was worth $400 but JEANNETTE CLARK pulled a blue rock and got the wine. But in recognition of June as National Dairy Month, she also got a pound of butter. Next week: $425!

Loretta collects her sunglasses, pays $5.

JEANNETTE then introduced ; . . .

. . . Ray Holley of the Sonoma County Workforce Investment Board Youth Council who spoke on youth employment issues.

With time remaining on the clock, PRESIDENT LEE called on TOM BUCKLEY. It was discovered that Tom had performed “a random act of kindness” by housing and feeding some visiting young performers at the Sheraton. That, plus his nephew’s graduation from USC, cost him $50.

This Week's Rotary Membership Moment
