This Week's Rotary Membership Moment

Who is a mentor? The person who agrees to shepherd a new member thought their first year of Rotary. A mentor welcomes them at meetings, introduces them to other members, sits with them and encourages them to join in activities and belong to a committee. In other word helps them get involved. Educates them on what Rotary is and how it functions.

Be a mentor, help a new member learn about Rotary.

Don't forget to submit your reservations for the Friendship Feast!

To the tune of Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown
(With apologies to Jim Croce)

Well the south side of Petaluma
Is really sort of keen
But if you go down there
You better just beware
Of a man named Leroy Bean.

Now, Leroy, he’s President of our Club
You see he stands over six foot long
He opened our meeting right on time
And had TED ADKINS lead us in song!

And he’s bad, bad, Leroy Bean
The baddest President you’ve ever seen
Badder than old King Kong
And meaner than a junkyard dog.

Now Leroy, he’s a stickler
And he likes things to go just right
So LARRY GOTFREDSON gave the invocation
Followed by handshakes and hugs real tight!

He had no visiting Rotarians,
Or Sunshine Report to pass by,
But he introduced each guest without his vest
And had ED FULLERTON talk to us about RI.

And he’s bad, bad, Leroy Bean
The baddest President you’ve ever seen
Badder than old King Kong
And meaner than a junkyard dog

He reported that there was a Chambers After Hours
Then Leroy, cool as ice
Said we had raised $6,500 for Katrina,
Thanks to LARRY JONAS
And ooo that sure was nice.

Well, Lee cast his eyes on NIT ANDERSON
And her trouble soon began
Then Nit, she learned a $50 lesson
‘Bout not wearing her Rotary Badge
when standing in front of the Man!

And he’s bad, bad, Leroy Bean
The baddest President you’ve ever seen
Badder than old King Kong
And meaner than a junkyard dog

Well, Leroy took to fining
An Alaska trip cost LARRY GOTFREDSON $20
And RALPH BETTINELLI $30 for a vague time in Las Vegas
So when Leroy fined TENNY TUCKER and
AL KAPLAN $100 each for fishing in Alaska and Oregon
We all thought he had plenty!!

And he’s bad, bad, Leroy Bean
The baddest President you’ve ever seen
Badder than old King Kong
And meaner than a junkyard dog

But old Leroy wasn’t finished
So he fined a couple more
He got a C-Note each from DAN LIBARLE and KIP HERZOG
for a joint 3-week trip to Scotland
And Dan’s newest grandson (Henry) cost Dan an additional $100
Man, Leroy sure did score!

And he’s bad, bad, Leroy Bean
The baddest President you’ve ever seen
Badder than old King Kong
And meaner than a junkyard dog

Now Leroy actually remembered the raffle
And it was won by a guest.
Leroy then introduced WHITNEY HALL as
our Speaker to talk about our McKinley School Reading Program
And the kids’ testimonial was the best!

And he’s bad, bad, Leroy Bean
The baddest President you’ve ever seen
Badder than old King Kong
And meaner than a junkyard dog

Finally, Leroy moved to close the meeting
It was the right thing to do to say the least
So he rang his bell
Wished us all well
And reminded us about the Friendship Feast!

And he’s bad, bad, Leroy Bean
The baddest President you’ve ever seen
Badder than old King Kong
And meaner than a junkyard dog

Yeah, he’s badder than old King Kong
And meaner than a junkyard dog!!

COMING EVENTS

September 22 - Whitney Hall presents a special McKinley School program
September 29 - Chris Albertson presents an interesting program

President LEROY “Where Ya” BEAN kicked off the meeting at precisely 12:30 p.m., and immediately passed the microphone over to

. . . STEVE “Hinges Are” RUSTAD, who enthusiastically led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and a rousing rendition of American the Beautiful (ain’t it the truth!!).

The microphone was then handed off to Past-President BARNEY “Not in my” FAUSS for a thought provoking invocation on the recognition of God throughout our Country’s history. The members then huddled up for their traditional handshakes and hugs.

Next, Past-President PAUL “Bearer” LOUNIBOS went across the middle to introduce the visiting Rotarians among us, followed by the introduction of all the guests of members. The Prez delivered the Sunshine Report, and was happy to announce that nobody was on IR (injured reserve), not even him!

Past-President LARRY “Please” JONAS then reported that his blitz of the Club for the Katrina Relief effort had raised $5600.00 thus far, all of which will be distributed through affiliate New York Rotary Clubs.

Back-up quarterback (President Elect) TAWNY “Tea and” TESCONI reported that the Steamer Landing Park dedication ceremony on September 12th was a huge success, and gave special kudos to CONNIE “Going to new” HEIZER for donating all the refreshments. Good job, Tawny and Connie!

Past-President ONITA “First Down” PELLEGRINI announced a joint tri-club after hours meeting scheduled for September 22nd. All members of our Club, the Valley Club and the Breakfast Club are welcome—call Onita for details.

RICH “Get Richer” POREMBA then announced that 32 art car cruisers around Petaluma will benefit the Petaluma Boys and Girls Club—call Rich for details. Rich went on to announce that our Club, the Valley Club and the Sunrise Club are co-hosting

Joanne Ferris with Veronica Levy of Cordoba, Argentina.

. . . a Rotary Exchange student who will be living with JOANNE “One of the” FERRIS and her family for the next 3 months. Rich also noted that there will be an exchange student barbeque on October 7 for all of the district exchange students-again, call Rich for details.

Past-President MIKE “Scoring” BADDELEY then reminded everyone of the upcoming Friendship Feast dinners scheduled for October 28-29 and November 4-5, the proceeds from which go directly to our Club’s student dictionary program. The Prez would like to have 100% participation this year, so pick one of the four dates and calendar it. See the attached play sheet for further details.

Past-President ED “Fumblerooski” FULLERTON then noted that the Sunrise Club had an interesting speaker scheduled for their regular 7:30 a.m. Friday meeting at the Petaluma Boulevard Café. Guest Karen Spurgeon then tiptoed down the sideline with an announcement on the upcoming (October 17th) Hospice Community Outreach Neighborhood Walk-call Past-President JEANETTE “You Can’t Just Eat One” CLARK for details.

The Prez then threw a late flag on ALDEN “With My Trip” HENNINGS, good for a $75 penalty, for being gone on a 13-week road trip to the East Coast, traveling through 23 states, and gaining a whopping 20,768,000 yards (11,800 miles) in the process! Welcome back, Alden!

The Prez then jumped offsides by forgetting the raffle, but recovered in time to make sure

. . . Past-President WALLY “I won’t” BRAGDON was able to manage the game clock and timely introduce our speaker,

. . . Wayne Fairchild, Vice-President of St. Joseph Health System, Chief of Operations at PVH, who gave us an informative presentation on the current state of PVH and its future plans. The Prez gave our speaker a commemorative Rotary pen, and a book was donated in his name to the PHS Library, for a job well done.

Hope you enjoy a touchdown filled weekend. Oh, and remember the Autumn Wind is a pirate…so go Raiders!

                      . . .

This Week's Rotary Membership Moment

Everyone likes to be recognized for a job well done. It’s always nice when the President of the club gives thanks for a job well done. As a club member you should always be ready with a sincere thanks and a warm handshake. There is no such thing as too much praise especially when it is given sincerely. Give thanks when you catch someone doing a good job. It will be appreciated.

When Rotarians know they are appreciated they stay Rotarians.

COMING EVENTS

September 15 - Pat Schaefer introduces new CEO for Health Systems
September 22 - Whitney Hall presents a special McKinley School program
September 29 - Chris Albertson presents an interesting program

A spry PRESIDENT LEE opened the meeting by calling on HERB BUNDESEN to lead the opening song.

Herb did more than that — he started our patriotic song with an excellently delivered solo lead-in.

WALLY BRAGDON presented the Thought for the Day

. . . and STEVE HOOD introduced visiting Rotarians.

LARRY JONAS discussed Hurricane Katrina relief efforts and the special Katrina fund within Rotary International. He urged members to reach into their checkbooks or wallets to support this worthy cause.

ED FULLERTON advised members who missed District Governor Charlie Kelly’s stirring talk that they’d have another chance in the morning. The DG was speaking at Petaluma Sunrise on Friday morning.

TAWNY TESCONI reminded members that they were invited to the dedication of Steamer Landing Park on Monday, September 12 at 1:00 p.m. The park is on McNear Channel at the foot of Copeland Street, just south of D Street.

JUDGE BEAN then got into the fining mode.

First victim was WALLY BRAGDON who paid for some offense your humble editor totally forgot. Maybe it was a vacation? But isn’t Wally always on vacation?

Next to face the Judge was RICK VAN BEBBER. It seems that the rehabilitation therapy following KAREN’s recent surgery involves a new automobile and loving husband Rick sprung for a Jaguar. It’s Karen’s car but Rick seems to enjoy driving it.

A happy STEVE OLMSTED announced a college graduation (his daughter’s? muses your senile editor) and contributed to the fine can.

Past President BABE AMARAL was next. He acknowledged a job realignment (from owner to truck driver?) and fondly remembered Emily’s solo trip to Alaska.

Tawny describes her fishing trip with Al Kaplan.

President-Elect TAWNY TESCONI was fined for something (fire this mindless editor!). You’ll have to ask her about it.

Next, AL KAPLAN described a successful fishing expedition to the Pacific Northwest where he landed a ton of halibut. He paid a healthy fine despite a sob story of the Native Americans getting all the crab he planned to catch.

ONITA PELLEGRINI proudly paid a fine for announcing that she’d be a grandmother (twice!) in 2006. It seems that her daughter and daughter-in-law are both expecting.

CHRIS ALBERTSON won the raffle and a bottle of wine. Next week the jackpot grows to $75.

RICK MOSSI then introduced

. . . Dale Biron of Core Action Associates who presented a program on “Mastering the Art of Change.”

Babe identifies the cell phone that rang during Dale's presentation.

Tawny protests, saying she didn't make any calls during the talk.

Larry Jonas collects Katrina contributions as members depart.

This Week's Rotary Membership Moment

Past RI President Glen Kinross said the following: “Rotary is a miracle because in an increasingly violent world, where intolerance is rampant and narrow allegiances to ethnic, political or religious creeds have become of paramount importance, Rotarians offer friendships and opportunities to people of all races and persuasions. Rotary is a miracle because it offers glimpses of a better world. Rotary works towards that possible and achievable society that will one day conquer the absence of peace, a society that will provide opportunities and equality for all.

Believe in the miracle: We are Rotarians!

COMING EVENTS

September 8 - Dale Brian, Core Action Association
September 15 - Pat Schaefer introduces new CEO for Health Systems
September 22 - Whitney Hall presents a special McKinley School program

A fit and healthy looking PRESIDENT LEE BEAN welcomed the crowd and asked GENE BENEDETTI to lead us in song.

GENE waved his cane with extra enthusiasm during “God Bless America” and we all raised our voices a little louder.

After waiting three years to be called on, NIT ANDERSON gave a terrific “Thought for the Day”.

HEIDI KIBBE introduced visiting Rotarians and JAMES BURLESON was dinged $10 while introducing his guest - $5 for thanking “PRESIDENT BABE” and another $5 for voicing profanity at his mistake. Ouch.

PRESIDENT LEE told us information regarding Hurricane Katrina relief funds would be announced next week, so let’s be ready to help.

DAVE AMUNDSEN gave a report on the successful booth operations at Infineon Raceway last weekend. It seems PAST PRESIDENT ED FULLERTON brought in plenty of tips from his good looks so, maybe if he finds a twin, Coors Light advertisements won’t be far away.

ED then recounted his trip to Germany and gave $40 to the Club for making us jealous because he flies for free.

STAN LAWSON added $150 for his recent exploits in Italy. Congratulations STAN on your 25th Wedding Anniversary. Our Guest Speaker Sue Roffman drew her own winning number from the raffle and walked away with a bottle of wine.

PRESIDENT LEE auctioned off some Cal football tickets and LOU STEINBERG and JOANNE FERRIS were the lucky recipients. (* Hey Prez, I’m looking for a pair for the Cal vs. USC game).

JOHN DADO introduced the program and gave a special thanks to our own HARVEY FREETLY and his vision for the Dictionary Project.

Nina Giacometti, from St. Vincent’s Elementary School, gave a terrific talk on the impact the Dictionary Program has had on her students. She was a third grade teacher when the program started and is now teaching those same kids in seventh grade. This firsthand look brought home the wonderful effect we can have when we support a program. Remember to sign up for the Friendship Feasts!

St. Vincent’s Elementary School principal Sue Roffman walked us through a visual tour of the recent renovation and construction of the new kindergarten and multi-use building. As a parent of a kindergarten student, I can attest that it is great facility. Thank you to both speakers for their fun and informative program. Great job.

Harvey and Marlene Freetly created this beautiful dictionary display.

God Bless and a safe Labor Day Weekend to you all.

Last Week's Rotary Membership Moment

Consider hosting an Exchange student from a different county. This is a wonderful opportunity for a Rotarian family to have a young student in their home sharing cultures. If we involve our families in Rotary they will come to understand the opportunities that Rotary has to offer and they will understand your commitment to the organization. Education and involvement will make us better Rotarians and we will want to share in this unique organization.

What better way to world peace and understanding?
