Congrats to all the Super Raffle Team Captains for selling over 1700 tickets! Great job.

LARRY JONAS gave a wonderful and colorful presentation on the Club’s Water Purification Project in Thailand. The photos were magnificent. They showed not only the significance of the work, but also the beauty of the Thai landscape and the kindness of the Thai people. Thank you, LARRY.

Crab Feed 2005 was a huge success. The Vets Hall was full of hungry people and everyone appeared to be in good spirits. Much time was spent seeing friends and having a few libations to begin the evening. HEIDI and her kids were kept busy selling drink tickets. Raffle ticket sales were also brisk The wives that helped check everyone in the door did a great job and the bartenders kept the lines short as they poured generous drinks.

Once the food began, the room was swarmed over by Interact students and Boy Scouts, as they made sure everyone had plenty of crab, salad, bread, butter and pasta.

Beer was set out on each table, which were again decorated under the direction of' Carol Ann Libarle. Anyone complaining that there was not enough food was just too busy talking and not eating as this year the crab was abundant and the salad and pasta just kept coming. The students and scouts did a great job checking the tables and making sure everyone had plenty to eat and drink. Clover ice cream completed the evening.

The raffle drawing took place as dinner was winding down and the big Winner ($8,000) was

. . . TOM BRANDAL's daughter, Kim Fowler. Tom was just as excited that he sold the winning ticket as he was that it was his own daughter. Second place ($1,200) was won by JEANNETTE CLARK's daughter Kathi Marinaccio.

Third place ($1,000) went to Ruth Iversen, wife of our former member Duke Iversen. It was good to see Duke there having a good time. Fourth Place ($600) went to Dennis Respini. Fifth place went to Tony Arrow on a ticket sold by HENRY HANSEL. Dr. DAVE SISLER took home the last prize of $200.

RICK MOSSI and WALLY BRAGDON and their whole committee did a great job selling tickets. This year 1700 tickets were sold. A salute to Chairman STEVE HENRIS and his entire crew for one of the best Crab Feeds ever.

COMING EVENTS

February 18 - Crab Feed and Super Raffle
February 24 - Larry Jonas and the trip to Thailand

Blustering BABE AMARAL, our perspicacious Prez, opened the meeting at exactly 12:30.

Genial GENE BENEDETTI led us in his trademark songs (Rambler-Gambler and God Bless America!), followed by his gregarious grandson,

. . . MARCUS BENEDETTI, who delivered a heartfelt Rudyard Kipling poem (about becoming a man) . . . although the puzzled Prez thought Marcus wrote it! The celebratory handshakes and hugs among our members ensued.

There were no visiting Rotarians at the meeting, but several guests of Rotarians were in attendance,

Guest Mary Ann Shoemaker.

. . . including the guests of loquacious LORETTA CATAROZOLI, edifying ED FULLERTON, and tenacious TOM BRANDAL.

Mike Yates of UPS was a guest at lunch.

This UPS crew helped Rotarians and Interact members move donated school equipment.

No Interact students joined us for lunch, but generous GENE BENEDETTI brought a young student guest

. . . (Will Tesconi) who was shadowing him for a school project. Humble HERB BUNDESEN then gave a Sunshine Report and informed us that determined DICK WEBER is getting stronger by the day, while devoted DUKE IVERSEN is slowing down a bit, but still getting around. They’re two of our toughest hombres, so we know they’ll both keep up the good fight!

The Prez reminded us that next week is the Club’s Crab Feed (2/18), so were dark on Thursday (2/17), and on the following Wednesday (2/23) the Petaluma Valley Rotary Club is hosting a centennial Rotary Anniversary Luncheon at Rooster Run GC. All of our members are invited to attend, but our Club is not dark that week (2/24) . . . which prompted several of our members to question Babe’s competency (and heritage) given that he’s had "99 years to coordinate a joint meeting” for the centennial celebration! Our perplexed Prez had no retort.

Winsome WALLY BRAGDON and resilient RICK MOSSI gave the weekly Crab Feed Raffle ticket team sales update: NANCY KOENTIZER’s team @ 83, omnipresent ONITA PELLEGRINI’s team @ 90, hedonistic HENRY HANSEL’s team @ 96, avuncular AL KAPLAN’s team @ 100, Wallys team @ 119, terrestrial TOM BAKER’s team @ 125, kinetic KIP HERZOG’s team @ 132, and jubilant JEANNETTE CLARK’s team @ 238 (a 983 sum total). All team captains then stood for a well deserved round of applause. Rick noted that the absolute drop-dead date for turning in your Crab Feed raffle tickets is next Thursday (2/17) by 5 pm @ Rick’s office (Exchange Bank in the Golden Eagle Shopping Center).

Disjunctive DAN LIBARLE, the Crab Feed chairman, reported that the Crab Feed sold out and everything is on schedule, but he could use a few more volunteers, especially now that Prez Babe has added pasta to the-menu which Dan and his crew will happily provide "even though it’s a lot of #*!?*% extra work,” according to Dan! He then queried whether or not anyone had heard about the Prez’s wife (Emily) winning a $4,000.00 Superbowl pool? Our chagrined Prez stammered out something about a fine being in order, then quickly segued to diagnostic DAN MARSH, who reluctantly sold his coveted Crab Feed tickets to Past President Fullerton for only face value—what a good guy!

The penurious Prez then fined tactful TAWNY TESCONI $30 for not bringing her nephew (Will) to the meeting (he was Gene’s guest) and for promoting her nephew’s writing contest. Thanks, Tawny. A $5.00 wireless connection fee was then assessed against distracted DAVE BARBIERI for making a cell phone call,

. . . while erudite ERIC GUNHIEM was zinged the same amount for wearing the wrong badge. Thanks, guys. Next, rejuvenated ROBERT MITCHELL was called upon to explain his wife’s picture in the Argus, and his recent "honeymoon" exploits with her in Florida and Antigua. The Prez assured Robert that a honeymoon did not constitute as a make-up meeting (heck, if that was the rule, the Prez would never have to make up another meeting!!).

Photo by Ed Fullerton Photo by Ed Fullerton

. . . Robert graciously donated $100 to the Foundation and $100 towards his Paul Harris, and gave a souvenir "chicken bus" to our poultry loving Prez. Thanks, Robert. The Prez then fined MARCUS BENEDETTI $10 for the long poem he delivered for the invocation (apparently the Prez prefers limericks . . .There once was a Prez named Jesse, who always left meetings kind of messy . . .). Thanks, Marcus.

Harbinger HARVEY FREETLY won the raffle (a bottle of wine), followed by a mass exodus of early leavers.

Program chairman LORETTA CATAROZOLI then introduced our speaker,

. . . Varenna Marketing Director Nancy de Bartok, and assistants Amanda Copenhaver and Molly Gallaher, who gave us an informative presentation on the various types of senior housing and continuing care living. A book was donated in their names to the PHS library for a program well received . . . especially when the speaker inquired as to whether or not any of our members were senior-housing residents. Not to be outdone, bodacious BARNEY FAUSS asked whether or not "nurses were billed out in 15 minute increments"!

Meeting adjourned, and we’ll see you at the Crab Feed! Hopefully, dawdling DON RAMATICI will be back from the AT&T golf tournament in time to join us. Oh, and if you see studious STEVE LAFRANCHI around, let him know :hat our Club still meets on Thursdays at the Vet’s Building!

Have a great weekend.

February 3, 2005

COMING EVENTS

February 10 - Nancy deBartok - Your Key to Senior Living
February 17 - Club dark
February 18 - Crab Feed and Super Raffle

The bell sounded at precisely 12:30 and PRESIDENT BABE brought the meeting to order.

STEVE RUSTAD led us in a jolly rendition of "I'm a Rambler" followed by an enthusiastic "America the Beautiful".

KEITH SOLTS gave the invocation. He prayed for the less fortunate and asked us to be thankful for all the things that we have. The usual hugs and handshakes quickly followed.

HARVEY FREETLY introduced the visiting Rotarians. The Rotarians with guests were then introduced.

HERB BUNDESEN announced that DICK WEBER was doing much better. Hope to see you soon DICK!!! RICK MOSSI took center stage next with his side kick, WALLY BRAGDON to announce the latest stats on the Super Raffle ticket sales. Looks like JEANNETTE CLARK's team has a commanding lead with 167. Where is HENRY HANSEL? His team is in last place. Remember to have all your tickets into RICK's office at Exchange Bank by 5:00p.m. on Thursday, February 17th. HARVEY FREETLY is getting things organized for the upcoming District Conference. He needs our help with photos and a summary of our good deeds, re: the trips to Thailand and Guatemala; the Interact Students activities; and the Dictionary distributions.

ED FULLERTON announced that the UPS Truck is filling up fast for the trip to Guatemala. A pick-up in San Rafael was next on the schedule.

PAT SCHAEFER, JOANNE FERRIS and LORETTA CATAROZOLI celebrated their anniversaries during the month of February. The PRESIDENT started his fining with JEANNETTE CLARK and LORETTA CATAROZOLI. It seems both ladies are having their kitchens remodeled with the same contractor. The PREZ didn't realize that the kitchens aren't finished, so the ladies paid $10 with more to come when the jobs are done. RICK SUSICK has been missing with the ducks. His experience away from home cost him $50.

TENNY TUCKER went to Hollister with the Elks. It seems the town ran out of gin which cost TENNY $10.

ONITA PELLEGRINI stood up and asked our PRESIDENT if she could give a fellow Rotarian some marital advice, since she'd had a little experience in the category (3 ex-husbands). Our PRESIDENT couldn't wait to hear the advice.

She asked JIM MICKELSON to stand and pointed out how he had been gone for an entire month. Poor Marcie didn't see him for New Year's Eve or his birthday. She passed the microphone to TAWNY TESCONI, who pointed out that JIM missed the first Fair Board meeting, too. KATHY O'CONNOR verified his absence after many conversations with his lonely wife. The ladies presented him with Vitamins, Preparation H and Depends. Items JIM needed at his age after a long trip away from home. For Marcie there was Mr. Perfect (it grows 3 or 4 times its size in water), Mr. Wonderful and an Inquirer. The ladies got him good and the PREZ fined him $20.

AL KAPLAN left his raffle tickets at the Valley Club which cost him $10. PRESIDENT BABE decided to get everyone without a badge.

ERIK GUNHEIM was to collect $5 from each one and finished off by noticing that our beloved PRESIDENT wasn't wearing one either. With an embarrassing smile, HE reached in his pocket and paid up. ERIK also won the raffle and walked away with a bottle of wine.

JOANNE FERRIS introduced our guest speaker, Marty Rubino.

Marty gave us a little history of the 144 year old Independent Journal and his colorful past year as publisher.
