Songleader Steve Rustad. Check out his Crab Feed cartoon!

Michael Caruana announces there are no visiting Rotarians.

After a lovely plate of beef tips accompanied by peas, carrots, and green beans, PRESIDENT ONITA PELLIGRINI called the meeting to order. STEVE RUSTAD lead us in song and JIM MCCAFFREY gave the thought for the day. Several members invited guests, including JEANETTE CLARK, TAWNY TESCONI, BILL HARTMAN, KIETH SOLTS, and PRESIDENT ONITA. KIP HERZOG and ART AGNEW are recovering well from recent stays in the hospital. Please keep them in your thoughts.

JEANETTE CLARK reminded us of the importance of recruiting new members and called TAWNY TESCONI to the podium.

TAWNY always serves our club with 110% effort and her latest contribution was introducing PAT SHAEFER as a new Rotarian. Welcome to the club, PAT (FYI—the Rota-Teller editors are always looking for new input). STEVE HENRIS announced that the Crab Feed is sold-out.

GENE ANDREWS called for volunteers to sell drink tickets at the Crab Feed (that’s Sell tickets, not Spend tickets).

RICH POREMBA announced the Boys and Girls Club Benefit Crab Feed will be held on Jan. 31st.

PRESIDENT ONITA kept RICH on his feet and fined him and RICK MOSSI $10each for a typo on our Crab Feed tickets. HARVEY FREETLY offered each a dictionary. These are intended for third graders, but he was willing to make an exception.

KEITH SOLTS gave his craft talk and left us with a motto to live by: “That and better will do” - General Booth, Founder, Salvation Army.

JOANNE FERRIS received her chicken badge and JAMES BURLESON is still looking for his.

PRESIDENT ONITA doled out some fines and tagged LARRY JONAS $50 for buying yet another vehicle (this guy buys cars like I buy coffee).

ROBERT MITCHELL showed off his tan and told us about his month long sojourn in Maui and Lanai - $80.

TOM BAKER received a $40 fine for two weeks on Maui . . .

and PRESIDENT ELECT BABE AMARAL was fined $50 for his quotations in the Press Democrat extolling the virtues of eating fish.

FRED WULFF won the raffle and walked away with a bottle of wine, giving someone a shot at next week’s meeting to win some cash.

HENRY HANSEL introduced our guest speaker, Mike Kasper of the United Way chapter serving Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino counties. Mike has a fascinating past working for Proctor and Gamble, as well as OCLI (now JDS Uniphase). He has brought his organizational brilliance and community contacts to help steer the United Way’s new focus on Community Action Programs. This program is a departure from the United Way’s past system of giving smaller donations to many organizations. The “shotgun” approach is giving way to a more balanced and better-funded support of fewer programs. His intelligence and passion were clearly evident and his talk was very informative. As Rotarians, we should be proud to work side by side with the United Way. Thank you, Mike.

Mike Kasper of United Way.

PLEASE TURN-OFF YOUR CELL PHONES. BETTER YET, LEAVE THEM IN YOUR CAR.

PRESIDENT ONITA opened the first meeting of the new year by reversing the normal order and calling on HERB BUNDESEN for the Thought for the Day.

Herb noted the recent holidays, the events of the past year, trends in contemporary society, and pondered what 2004 would bring. After covering war and peace and life and death, he announced his big worry of the year. “What’ll happen to the Rotary Club when BABE AMARAL takes the gavel?”

Babe reacts to Herb's concerns.

GENE BENEDETTI was next, leading a spirited God Bless America in his inimitable style. With nary a single visiting Rotarian, it was time for introduction of members’ guests. RALPH PELTON introduced former Club President Ernie Jensen, visiting from Arkansas. KEITH SOLTS introduced Suzanne Irwin-Wells, WALLY BRAGDON introduced Pat Schaefer, LORETTA CATAROZOLI introduced her granddaughter, Kylie Kramer and PRESIDENT ONITA introduced Daniel Marsh.

JOHN DADO announced that the Rotary Day at the Races would take place tomorrow with the bus leaving the fairgrounds at 10:45 a.m.

JERRY GILLESPIE announced that it was last call for Rotary shirts and caps — and that everyone had paid except BABE AMARAL.

WALLY BRAGDON, standing in for RICK MOSSI, plugged the Super Raffle noting that it will provide funds for our Centennial Project, the rehabilitation of the Walnut Park playground and gazebo. He complimented ED FULLERTON for successfully selling a raffle ticket to Mrs. Bragdon, but noted that Ed had Marilyn make the check payable to “Ed Fullerton Rotary.” Ed was promptly fined $10 for founding his own Rotary Club.

Crab Feed chairman STEVE HENRIS noted that there were only 150 crab feed tickets left and that the main dining room was almost sold out. If you are planning to attend, be sure to see Steve to buy your $35 tickets right away. Volunteers are needed to help set up on Thursday night, February 12. Contact Steve if you can help.

JIM BECKER announced that a container of donated supplies would soon be leaving Petaluma for Guatemala City, thanks to the generosity of local Rotarians. You can help load the container this Saturday; show up behind the Thai restaurant on Petaluma Blvd. North at 9:00 a.m. You can also help unload the container in Guatemala January 29 through February 3. Contact Jim if you want to be part of this important project. Among the goodies in the container are 100 dictionaries from HARVEY FREETLY and lots of surplus schoolroom equipment located by GRETA VIGUIE. Still needed is additional sports equipment. Call LARRY JONAS for a pick up of that unused sports gear in your garage.

HARVEY FREETLY reported that our dictionary project had distributed over 900 dictionaries to local third-graders this year. He especially thanked JOHN DADO, AL KAPLAN and STEVE OLMSTED for their assistance and noted that our little project had spread throughout the area. In District 5130 some 36 clubs have followed our lead and collectively purchased and distributed some 10,300 dictionaries. Clubs in other districts throughout Northern California are also jumping on the bandwagon.

Mike Baddeley reveals shocking details.

MIKE BADDELEY then rose to note that a Petaluma icon that stood “for all that is good and right about America” had unfortunately met the same fate as Bozo the Clown and Peewee Herman. Displaying a photo of Clo the Cow being placed in the back seat of a police car, he reported that she had been arrested for unsavory activities on Santa Rosa Avenue.

Gene Benedetti waits for hot potato from Marcus.

Called upon to defend Clo’s honor, MARCUS BENEDETTI quickly sidestepped the issue and passed the buck to GENE BENEDETTI. Gene defended his cow’s honor but Mike would have none of it. Stay tuned! There’s bound to be more to come.

Ralph Bettinelli wins wine, gives it away.

Babe Amaral introduces the speaker.

RALPH BETTINELLI won a bottle of wine in the raffle and promptly gave it to County Supervisor Mike Kerns. After BABE AMARAL’s introduction, Supervisor Kerns discussed current issues in county government and answered questions from the floor.
