Fullerton Air was the theme of Debunking 2003 which gave outgoing President ED FULLERTON a sendoff he won’t soon forget. Wearing a leather helmet and goggles and seated in the cockpit of a PanAm 747 miraculously crammed into JOHN RAMTICI’s hangar at Petaluma Airport, PRESIDENT ED relived his Rotary year - and the many preceding years as well.
A large contingent of the Fullerton family (including all 9 grandchildren) was on hand for the festivities. Three of the grandkids flew in from Germany and won the prize for having come the longest distance. But Sharon and JOHN DADO deserve mention as well. They rolled their luggage into the Fullerton Air terminal looking for a connection to Penngrove.
Well over a hundred guests enjoyed abundant hors d’oeuvres, beverages, and a great dinner with fine wines provided by TAWNY TESCONI. After dinner, PRESIDENT ED conducted his last meeting. TED ADKINS led the song, JIM McCAFFREY gave the invocation, and ED delivered brief remarks and thanked his board for their help during the past year. He noted that ROY MUSICK and the late BOB FOSTER were the special people who had invited him to join Rotary. He introduced Maxine Foster and then called up Linda and ROY MUSICK for presentation of a Paul Harris to ROY. After all this, ED forgot the raffle.
Fortunately the flight to Penngrove was delayed, allowing Past President JOHN DADO to be on hand to present ED and Carol a thank you gift from the Club. No Penngrove trip for our Past President and his bride. They’ll be flying to Shelter Cove (on Fullerton Air) to spend a luxurious weekend on the Humboldt County coast.
ED pinned his President pin on ONITA, ONITA pinned a Past President Pin on ED, and another Rotary year had come to an end. We welcome President ONITA PELLEGRINI and look forward to her first meeting on July 3 and to another successful Rotary year.
Behind the scenes: A long list of Rotarians (and spouses) made the evening possible. You’ll hear more about them at the next meeting. But here are some that your editor recalls. JOHN RAMATICI donated his hangar for the evening. (To make room for the tables, he took his plane on a fishing trip.) TAWNY TESCONI, LORETTA CATAROZOLI, and ONITA PELLEGRINI planned, coordinated and executed just about everything. Marilyn Bragdon constructed a life-size (almost) 747. NORM SANTOS made the plane airworthy. RICK VAN BEBBER built the metal detector and helped STEVE OLMSTED and Stan Catarozoli with the bar. JOHN DADO and WALLY BRAGDON helped with planning and setup. And where would we have been without the planning and delivery of RICARDO MARZO, the master of ceremonies?

June 27 - Debunking, 6:30 p.m., Petaluma Airport
July 3 - President Onita's first meeting - "The Coming Year"
While we were enjoying a glass of wine or champagne, the bell sounded at precisely 12:30 and PRESIDENT ED called his last meeting in the Veteran’s building to order. TED ATKINS led us in an enthusiastic “God Bless America”.
LARRY GOTFREDSON stepped up to the podium next for the invocation. He asked us to remember our past members and the good news from our new members. He thanked PRESIDENT ED for his year and welcomed PRESIDENT-ELECT ONITA and reminded us all of our commitment to service above self.
The usual hugs and handshakes quickly followed. The tradition seemed a little louder and longer than it has been in awhile. GENE ANDREWS then introduced the visiting Rotarians
Rotarians with guests were introduced followed by the parents of our scholarship recipients.
RICARDO MARZO was up next with the Sunshine Report on DAN LIBARLE. DAN had a little fall from his horse on the infamous Trailblazer Ride. He’s doing fine, but probably a little embarrassed to show up for the meeting. Too bad PRESIDENT-ELECT ONITA does not have a short memory.
PRESIDENT ED announced the recent death of Ade Majiyagbe, the wife of RI PRESIDENT-ELECT JONATHAN MAJIYAGBE. She was very active in Rotary in her homeland of Nigeria.
Rotary International has established “Ade’s Hope Fund for the Education of Women and Children” for memorial contributions. They should be sent to the Rotary Foundation, PO Box 75133, Chicago, IL 60675. These gifts count towards your Paul Harris. |
MICHAEL CARUANA gave us the latest news on the RYLA Camp and what a great experience it was for all who attended.
LARRY JONAS presented us with a flag and a pin from the Rotary International Convention in Australia. LARRY described the convention “as bringing the Rotary Magazine to life”. It was a great experience we should all try to have.
RICARDO MARZO reminded us of the upcoming splash in the Argus Courier about Rotary. Please call him with an articles or advertisements you would like to see in the paper.
JOE ALLEN proudly accepted his Chicken Badge from PRESIDENT ED. Congratulations JOE!!
LORETTA CATAROZOLI reminded us that the fun begins at 6:30 on Friday, the 27th at JOHN RAMATICI’s hanger for PRESIDENT ED’s debunking . Don’t miss out on this crazy event.
The Happy Birthday song was next for all our Rotarians born in June.
CRAFT TALK #1
Who was born in North Dakota, spent time in the Air Force and lived in India for 6 months? He also attended UC Berkeley and decided California was the place to be. He’s been married to Marsha for 35 years and has 3 children. It’s RON HARRIS, the optometrist who used up his one day of free advertising by wearing a tie with big eyes and glasses.
CRAFT TALK #2
Who’s the gentleman from a family of 10 who came to the U.S. in 1952 from the island of Malta? Detroit was their home until the cold brought them to California. He served time in Vietnam and finished college to become an engineer. He had a successful air and gas machinery business and now does consulting. He and his wife Diane have 3 boys. It’s MICHAEL CARUANA, who’s grateful for the U.S. and the opportunities it has given him.
DOUG GARRISON then introduced the proud $500 scholarship recipients.
Congratulations ladies!
PRESIDENT ED was bound and determined to give away the $200 raffle prize, but not before AL KAPLAN, RALPH BETTINELLI, PRESIDENT ED’s granddaughter Hannah, LEE BEAN and JERRY GILLESPIE all drew blue rocks. Finally, MICHAEL CARUANA put us out of our misery and picked the brown rock and walked away with the cash.
This was DUKE IVERSON’s last meeting. PRESIDENT ED thanked him for his many years of service to the Club. We’ll miss you. Be sure to check in on us every once and awhile.
This was PRESIDENT ED’s last official meeting, so he decided to fine himself $100 for all the things he didn’t get done. The meeting was adjourned.

COMING EVENTS
June 19 - President Ed’s last official meeting
June 26 - Club dark (Debunking June 27)
June 27 - Debunking, 6:30 p.m., Petaluma Airport
July 3 - President Onita's first meeting - "The Coming Year"
The meeting was called to order by PRESIDENT ED who informed all in attendance that we would only have to put up with him for 2 ½ more weeks. Immediately the crowd went wild. One can only wonder if it was joy or sadness for Ed leaving the helm of our club.
TED ADKINS came forward and led us in song. The hall was filled with those wonderful words of God Bless America. JEANNETTE CLARK then gave the Thought for The Day. After much hugging and hand shaking President Ed called RICK OBERLIN forward to introduce the visiting Rotarians. We welcomed our fellow Rotarians from Santa Rosa West & Petaluma Valley. Visiting Rotarians were then introduced by several of our members.
We were informed in the Sunshine Report that one of our cowboys suffered a fall from his horse during a recent Trailblazers Ride and suffered rib damage to his body. We plan to get to the full story from our rider once he is able to make a meeting. In the meantime I would suggest he give up four-legged horses for three-legged stools. I’m sure DAN LIBARLE would welcome a call from his fellow Rotary members.
STEVE OLMSTED reminded all members that dues are due by month end. It would help Steve out to get your payment in A.S.A.P. Also, The Argus Courier is putting together a Rotary section in the near future. It was suggested that if possible individual members support the effort by placing an ad in the section. Contact the Argus Courier. for information.
LORETTA CATAROZOLI reminded everyone of Presidents Ed’s Debunking on June 27, 2003 at the Petaluma Airport. It should be an evening of friendship and fun for all. Please let Loretta know if you can or cannot attend. Otherwise expect a phone call from the committee.
PRESIDENT ED then caught everyone off guard by pulling ticket # 5137 from the raffle box. The lucky winner of the raffle was ANDY KVALHEIM who was rewarded with a bottle of wine for his rock pulling ability.
CLARK ROSEN was called upon by President Ed to be recognized for being recognized for being featured in the Argus Courier Community Profile section. Clark tried to play down the article in question. However; President Ed was not convinced that Clark should get off without paying a fine. In the end Clark came up with the cash.
DOUG GARRISON was next called upon to tell us of his recent trip to Ohio. Doug proudly told us that he was in Ohio to celebrate his son’s graduation from Oberlin College (At this point RICK OBERLIN cheered. Seems like the college was named after Rick’s Great Grandfather who was the catalyst of the Underground Railroad.) Doug also told us of a new Irish drink he sampled while in Ohio. Call Doug for the recipe, It will be worth your call. Doug proudly paid a fine for his son’s graduation.
PRESIDENT ED then called upon KAREN VAN BEBBER to tell us of her Mothers Day experience. Seems that she and RICK made the decision to look at motor homes. On Saturday before Mothers Day they spent several hours visiting with a local salesperson at Henry’s R.V. Petaluma Salesroom. The day ended with Karen feeling like she wanted to forget the whole idea of purchasing a motor home. Along came Sunday morning and the phone rang, much to Karen’s surprise Henry’s salesperson was on the line wishing her a Happy Mothers Day. Karen said thank you and then was told she should come out and sign papers on her new motor home. Seems Rick had went out and made the purchase. In the end it was a very Happy Mother’s Day for Karen. It must be noted that the gas tank was full. Thanks HENRY!!
RALPH SARTORI was next called upon to explain the reason he now had milk when he had made a remark to President Ed that milk was missing from the serving table. Ralph told of how it bothered him not to have milk on the table especially since JUNE IS DAIRY MONTH. Ralph asked the dairymen in attendance to back him up. In the end both RALPH and KIP HERZOG were fined.
CONNIE HEIZER then introduced our guest speakers from the Flavors Media Group. A very informative presentation was made explaining how this group works to put together TV programs supporting local business. I would suggest you contact Connie if you’re interested in using TV to advertise your business. The samples shown were very personal and professional.

June 19 - President Ed’s last official meeting
June 26 - Club dark (Debunking June 27)
June 27 - Debunking, 6:30 p.m., Petaluma Airport
July 3 - President Onita's first meeting - "The Coming Year"
With the sun nearly setting on his year, PRESIDENT ED opened the meeting with BARNEY FAUSS leading us in “Gypo” and then “God Bless America”. WALLY BRAGDON got the gold star for the day accurately defining “Gypo” as a lumber buyer.
HERB BUNDENSEN gave a simple but profound thought for the day, although the needs in the world appear overwhelming, a simple act of kindness to one means a lot to the recipient.
JOE ALLEN introduced the visiting Rotarians. BILL GROVERMAN, DAN REED and VERA CIAMMETTI introduced their guests.
Sunshine Report: Julie Steinberg is recovering at home and doing well.
Announcements:
PRESIDENT ED:
DAVE AMUNDSEN: The Interact Club will participate in a Beach Clean Up and BarBQ at School House Beach. Call him for more details if you can help.
JOHN DADO: There will be a meeting of the Petaluma Rotary Foundation Board on June 11 at 9:30am, at 455 McNear to discuss recipients of this year's grants.
WALLY BRAGDON introduced our speakers, Kay Marquet, President and CEO of Community Foundation of Sonoma County, and Kate Ecker, Director of Development at the Foundation. The Community Foundation of Sonoma County is 20 years old, but the original Community Foundation was started in Massachusetts in 1914. In the 20 years the Foundation has been active in our county, it has contributed 48 million dollars to local causes. Currently they are starting an outreach program to change the perception that they are only a Santa Rosa Institution; they want Sonoma County to know that they include the needs of the total county in their programs. They have identified Petaluma and Healdsburg as areas that they hope will show interest in working with the Foundation.
PRESIDENT ED closed that meeting with a reminder that he has only 2 more meetings and that the scholarship recipients will be recognized at the last meeting.
