These folks are celebrating January birthdays.

Birthdays were celebrated for the month, including BABE AMARAL, GINA PITTLER, PAUL LOUNIBUS, LYNN DE L’EAU, DOUG GARRISON, JIM MICKELSON and LEE BEAN.

Doug Garrison wins a bottle of wine.

DOUG GARRISON then won the raffle, a bottle of wine

Court was then in session, with Judge MIKE BADDELEY presiding. The case involved President-elect-elect BABE AMARAL as the defendant, with his attorney RALPH SARTORI and TENNY TUCKER as the plaintiff, with his attorney ERIK GUNHEIM. The jury selected was ART AGNEW, HERB BUNDESEN and DON RAMATICI.

The case involved the destruction of club property (Tenny’s raffle tickets). After much discussion and debate, including the use of the “Portagee 3 way test (1. Is it good for me? 2. Is it fair to me? 3. Does anyone know?)” the court called a series of Witnesses. In the end Justice was served and BABE was found Guilty as Charged.

BABE was sentenced to purchase 6 tickets from TENNY and abstain from any alcoholic beverages between the hours of 9am to 5pm for 30 days.

RICK MOSSI introduced his guest (Steve Powell), DAN REED introduced his wife, Ann, GENE BENEDETTI introduced Bob Acorne, and JERRY GILLESPIE introduced the PHS baseball coach who made a surprise presentation. This banner will hang behind home plate on the PHS diamond.

President-elect ONITA PELLEGRINI encouraged nominations and attendees for the 2002 Petaluma Community Recognition Awards Night on March 13. She also encouraged newer members (those who’ve joined in the past 3 years) to join her and her board at the District Assembly on March 14-15 in Ukiah. The Club will pay the registration fee for newer members who attend. PRESIDENT ED announced a Rotary Ski Challenge at Tahoe on Friday, March 7. Contact Ed for details. He also announced that the legal proceeding regarding the allegedly destroyed raffle tickets had been postponed until the next meeting on January 30.

Tenny Tucker describes golf in Thailand.

Nit Anderson demonstrates massage that golfers receive in Thailand.

When TENNY TUCKER admitted to a 20-day golfing expedition in Thailand (complete with one girl to carry his clubs and another girl to hold an umbrella above him) PRESIDENT ED hit him with a $50 fine. Then NIT ANDERSON demonstrated Thai massage techniques given pampered golfers. Tenny had no comment.

John Scharer acknowledges new grandson, pays $100.

Barney Fauss has (surprise!) something to say.

Connie Heizer insists she is open on Tuesdays.

BARNEY FAUSS paid $5 for an impromptu outburst before PRESIDENT ED could chastise CONNIE HEIZER for closing her restaurant (Encore Edibles, 160 Petaluma Blvd. North, between Graziano’s and Hong Kong Restaurant) on a Tuesday. Connie pleaded not guilty (she’s closed Mondays) but paid a $25 fine for the advertising.

Jerry Gillespie describes joys of the cruise lifestyle.

The bell sounded at precisely 12:30 and PRESIDENT ED called the meeting to order. HERB BUNDESEN led us in a lively rendition of “Oh Beautiful”.

TAWNY TESCONI stepped up to the podium next for the invocation. She reminded us that it’s not just words we live by but the kindness we show to others.

The usual hugs and handshakes quickly followed with PRESIDENT ED tapping the bell to get the friendly group back to their seats.

JAMES GOTELLI introduced the visiting Rotarians followed by Rotarians with guests and Interact students.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Dan Libarle urges members to get Crab Feed tickets soon.

Loretta Catarozoli updates status of raffle ticket sales.

RICK OBERLIN won the raffle and walked away with a fine bottle of wine. RICK forgot that LEE BEAN won the big bucks last week and bought $10 worth of raffle tickets. Thanks for the donation RICK.

Dan Reed buys new home, pays fine.

It seems DAN REED made his wife very happy by buying a new home in Boulevard Heights. PRESIDENT ED made the Rotarians happy by letting DAN donate $50 to the Club.

Vera Ciammetti waves stale check from jesting Art Agnew.

PAST DISTRICT GOVERNOR ARTHUR AGNEW was up next with PRESIDENT ED reminding him of his 63rd wedding anniversary. The PDG let everyone know how lucky he was to have Evelyn with him all those years. He knew PRESIDENT ED was looking for a donation and offered up a check for $15.15. The problem was that the check was from 1937 and drawn on Bank of America in Valley Ford. Since that is now Bank of Petaluma, DAN LIBARLE was sure he could still negotiate the check (to ART’S surprise). Of course ART was only kidding and gave us a current check for $63.

Rick Van Bebber admits to another good day at the races.

RICK VAN BEBBER had a very successful day at the horse races. He walked away with $200 but KAREN VAN BEBBER out did him with $400. PRESIDENT ED fined him $25 and will get KAREN later.

Fred Frost overhauls his Mooney, pays fine.

Thank goodness FRED FROST’S business is doing well. He was able to have his airplane in the shop for a top overhaul. PRESIDENT ED was so delighted that FRED will be safe that he fined him $50.

Onita Pellegrini introduces guest speaker.

ONITA PELLEGRINI introduced our guest speaker, Mark Mooney, from the Strozzi Institute. Mark teaches leadership skills to businesses, coaches, consultants and individuals all across the United States. Mark asked the question “What is a leader? A leader is someone who is smart, knowledgeable and has character. What do I need to lead my business and my life? The answer: integrity and dignity.” Mark then asked us to think about what value we have as human beings. He definitely made us think about ourselves.

Mark Mooney (not related to Fred's Mooney) talks on leadership.

Lee Bean and Ralph Bettinelli count spots as John Scharer dumps the dice cup.

As John Dado listens, Steve Olmsted explains alien abduction to Dave Amundsen.

After BARNEY FAUSS led us in God Bless America, JIM McCAFFREY’s invocation recalled his family motto that recognized the goodness in men. STEVE GAVRILOFF introduced our one visiting Rotarian and guests were introduced by LOU STEINBERG (Superintendent of Schools, Greta Viguie), WALLY BRAGDON (Scott Biset, The Oaks) and RICK MOSSI (Steve Powell, Flying Dutchman Travel).

Wally Bragdon admires the crabs on Loretta Catarozoli's chart.

WALLY BRAGDON urged members to sell (and turn in!) their Super Raffle tickets. PRESIDENT ED noted that that the funds raised by this annual raffle make possible the good works that we do. In addition to ongoing assistance to scholarships, scouting, COTS, the Boys & Girls Club, etc., the raffle has made possible major projects such as the McNear Park playground and the sign (coming soon) in front of the Vets Building. He noted that his board is considering ideas for a new major project and invited member input into this process.

Steve Henris announces Crab Feed details.

STEVE HENRIS announced that tickets for the February 14 Crab Feed ($35 each) are now on sale. This is always a sell-out so get your money to Steve’s office (Henris Roofing, 741 Petaluma Blvd. South, 763-1535) right away. Steve also announced that a steak alternative for non-crab-eaters was no longer being offered. (Let them eat pasta!) He’s looking for volunteers to help with setup on February 13 and to tend bar and sell drink tickets at the event.

Marcus Benedetti wonders where they hid the cat.

Harvey Freetly offers Marcus a dictionary of his very own.

When MARCUS BENEDETTI helped distribute dictionaries to third-graders this year, he made it a point of showing the kids how to use this important book. However it seems that Marcus amazed the students when he couldn’t find “cat” in the dictionary. While he insists that his dictionary was catfree (and denied looking for “kat”) he ended up paying a $50 fine.

PRESIDENT ED complimented Past President BARNEY FAUSS for his great work in organizing the December 19 Interact luncheon and then zapped him with a $25 fine. JIM McCAFFREY, declaring that he was “very fortunate to be living the life of Riley,” offered a $100 fine for his blessings.

Jim McCaffrey is happily the "Chairman of the Over-the-Hill Gang."

Then our President noted that a formal complaint had been filed against a member for damaging Club property and causing embarrassment to the Club. Wanting the truth to prevail and without making any accusations, he announced that BABE AMARAL would have the opportunity to face his accuser in a legal proceeding at the January 23 meeting. Babe wasn’t quite speechless, as he requested that a sober TENNY TUCKER be available as a witness.

Lee Bean grabs a brown rock and $275.

LEE BEAN pulled a brown rock from the bag to walk off with the $275 raffle prize. Next week the pot starts again at $25.

Rich Poremba introduces the program.

Before introducing the guest speaker, RICH POREMBA invited our French exchange student, Anissa Daaou, to say a few words. She discussed her time in Petaluma and profusely thanked the club for this “wonderful experience.”

Anissa Daaou is keen on Petaluma, America, and the exchange student program.

Then Chris Brannan , Youth Exchange Chairman for District 5130, described the extent and benefits of Rotary’s Youth Exchange program. With 10,000 students participating each year, the benefits to world understanding are obvious. More information on our District’s involvement (24 of the 43 clubs participate) is available at www.youthexchange5130.org.

Chris Brannan describes Rotary's Exchange Student program.

Lucie Sweda leads God Bless America.

HERB BUNDESEN shared with us a very thought provoking homily. We bowed a reverent head and listened as Herb shared with us profound questions which made all of us think about everyday life. Of course, the walls expanded with laughter when Herb delivered the punch line which observed that if we had done all of these things successfully without having to ‘think’ then we were the family dog! After Herb’s comedic delivery the hugs, handshakes and kissing commenced. It was a perfect time to greet our fellow Rotarians on the first month, second day of the third year of the new millennium.

Herb Bundeson reflects on the family dog.

We had no visiting Rotarians and the long list of guests were introduced, one of which is our French Exchange Student ANISSA DAAOU who shared a gracious thank you to the club which has been so supportive to her during her stay in our community. She expressed her gratitude to the Rotarians who presented her with a Christmas check which she will use to travel to Colorado to see a classmate from ‘home’ who is also studying in the United States.
