April 25 - GSE Program
Welcome to the annual Petaluma Rotary Interact Luncheon boasting the highest attendance yet this year at 102 members and guests. Twenty-one Interact students were guests of Rotarians and participated in a great meeting. Good job, BARNEY FAUSS for organizing this successful event. They were privileged to hear GENE BENEDETTI lead the group in Rambler Gambler and God Bless America and to hear a thought for the day by our own PRESIDENT JIM MICKELSON. He reviewed the requirements to be an Interact member and Interact advisor, reflecting on the importance of those roles in our organization. JIM also announced that this is the first year Interact will be holding it’s own International Convention in Barcelona, Spain.
GENE ANDREWS introduced the visiting Rotarians while PRESIDENT JIM introduced long-time Rotarians BILL LANE, DAVE SISLER, and AL BATTAGLIA who graced us with a rare appearance. PRESIDENT JIM made sure the newer members met this scarce trio while he fined them $20 each just for showing up.
While BABE AMARAL was called upon to report on the Farmer’s and Merchant’s Night with attendance of 292, GENE BENEDETTI could hold back no longer. He came forward with such praise for the entertainment of the evening that he insisted those hard working Rotarians should be paid. Apparently he even organized a campaign of letters of accommodation and dollar bills sent to BABE and RALPH BETTINELLI to compensate their effort and commitment encouraging them to come back next year. Since the Corda’s, who performed in last year’s entertainment ended up going to Vegas, we want to make sure we don’t lose our own members to such opportunity!
However, MIKE BADDELEY’s remarks were of a more precarious nature. His comment that the female MC on stage disrobe to save the show not only suggested harassment of a sexual nature, but deeply distressed yours truly. Is that called pain and suffering?
GENE BENEDETTI also noted the creamer on the table made no reference to Clover and was quite upset about that. When PRESIDENT JIM presented the box it came in identifying the product as Clover, GENE’s representation, MIKE BADDELEY, came quickly to his defense. This generated a $25 fine for GENE, $40 for MIKE and additional $50 from BABE and $40 from Ralph for the above mentioned.
JERRY GILLESPIE reported on the Interact Club’s Alliance Redwood Conference attended by 220 students and several of our members. LOU STEINBERG noted the Casa Grande High School Decathlon team has won three years in a row and are invited to the Nationals in Phoenix. The team is in need of sponsors to help them get there.
Happy Birthday was sung to all March birthdays and those either sitting or not sitting at the table were fined $5 or $10 appropriately, including RICK OBERLIN who was celebrating his non-birthday at the birthday table and apparently blew it by squirming to get out of a fine he was not going to be levied in the first place.
BARNEY FAUSS introduced speaker, Squire Fridel, an actor who gave entertaining and excellent advise on mastering the art of the interview. In fact, he claims that is why 10% of the actors get all the jobs, they know how to make a first impression.
April 27 is the date of the Petaluma Butter and Eggs Day Parade and a first for Rotary to enter. Our club has joined with Petaluma Valley and Sunrise Clubs to design a float in the spirit of the parade theme “Moosic, Magic, and Make Believe.” If you are interested in participating, contact Onita Pellegrini, Ed Fullerton, or Maureen Joyce. This is going to the fun! The committee would like all those who participate in the parade to wear Rotary Club golf style shirts with the Rotary emblem and club name embroidered on them. We will ask for a count of how many would like to order a shirt at he next meeting (whether you participate in the parade or not.)
There are 636 Rotary License Plates on order in the race to meet the 7500 minimum by December 31, 2002. Your order will bring an annual income to this club. Question? Contact yours truly.

Petaluma Rotary Club hosted its annual Farmers and Merchants night at the Vet's Memorial Friday night. Under the able leadership of committee co-chairmen RALPH BETTINELLI and BABE AMARAL the evening went by without a hitch.
Honorary Rotarian Ron Walters started the evening off on a low note, literally, as he scaled "God Bless America" down to where the deepest bass could sing. JIM McCAFFREY asked for blessings on our food and works. A live country and western singer provided entertainment during happy hour and the steak dinner.
PRESIDENT JIM took the stage to present Ron Walters with his certificate of honorary Rotary membership and turned the microphone over to BABE AMARAL to begin the entertainment. Babe introduced team captains RALPH SARTORI and MAUREEN JOYCE who called their teams to the stage for a game of Survivor. The “Hicks” team made up of BABE, RALPH, GARY (ag tires) BRODIE, and PRESIDENT JIM had to identify various legal and financial terms. LARRY JONAS, RICK OBERLIN, JEANNETTE CLARK, and NANCY KOENITZER were on the “Sophisticates” and had to identify types of manure using the sense of smell and to sample various milk types, some that were adulterated. The final test was for the Hicks to put together a computer system and the Sophisticates to assemble a milking machine. The contest ended with both teams technically and “udderly" confused. A tie was called. The evening ended with the bar open until 10 o’clock.

COMING EVENTS
March 14 - Randy Shipe - ""My Mind's Got a Mind of its Own" (Neuroscience/At Risk Youth/Behavior Change)
March 21 - Club dark
March 22 - Farmers & Merchants Night - Cocktails start at 6:00 p.m.
President JIM MICKELSON called the meeting to order and the Rotary Club of Petaluma was off to another great start. How else could our president add some spice to his rather dull meeting openings them to call on LUCIE SWEDA to lead us in song. LUCIE bailed our Pres. out (as usual) and we were off and running.
PRESIDENT JIM then called upon LARRY GOTFREDSON to give the invocation. LARRY told us about the Telephone and how we all have our private opinions of the phones and how they differ from circumstance to circumstance. In the end the Telephone can provide a wonderful experience to our lives if we wish.
CHET SWANSON was called upon to introduce the visiting Rotarians. Seems CHET was caught off guard, as he had no idea of who the visiting Rotarians were. HARVEY FREETLY came to CHET's rescue and the visiting Rotarians from The Petaluma Sunrise Club, and The Harrison Ark. Club were introduced. PRESIDENT JIM then fined CHET $ 10.00 for not being ready when called upon.
ED FULLERTON, DAVE AMUNDSEN, and DAN LIBARLE introduced their guests and the fun time of the meeting was about to begin.
BABE AMARAL reported on Farmers & Merchants Night. This year's event will be held on Friday evening March 22, 2002 at the Petaluma Vet's Hall. Tickets will be $20-00 each. Place your ticket orders with MAUREEN JOYCE 763-3310 or BILL GROVERMAN 763-2772.
You will be billed for the number of tickets you order. This year's menu will feature steak, pasta, salad, and dessert. Due to several people talking I cannot confirm but a rumor his surfaced that a local cattle baron (who's usually the last person to see cattle alive) may even donate the steak. Babe then asked for help with bartenders, since they will be in demand for this special night. JIM GOTELLI stated that he and his girlfriend could help bartend, which was puzzling to us since last time he said his fiancée would help. JIM, Get your story straight.
ED FULLERTON then reported on the recent meetings he attended in preparation for his presidency next year. Sounds like ED has a Great Year planned for our club. ED also mentioned that he and several Rotarians helped send off a group of dentists sponsored by Rotary on their way to Mexico from the Petaluma Airport. NOTE: Members can view some great photos of this event by going to "Ed Fullerton's Photo Album" in the "Members Only" area.
We went from ED's report back to BABE talking about Farmers & Merchants Night as BABE got up and asked everyone to order their tickets ASAP!, Don't wait until the last minute. ED, we apologize for the interruption. I think BABE was really thinking about the steaks and wanted to be certain we (he) didn't run short.
PRESIDENT JIM then asked BABE how it felt to move back into his house. As anticipated all in attendance were stunned by PRESIDENT JIM's remark. After the laughter stopped PRES. JIM explained that BABE had moved out so that his home could be remodeled, and the new addition and new kitchen could be completed. Seems our President did a drive-by and was impressed enough to fine Babe $100.00 for his efforts. Once again BABE asked "Please, Please get your ticket orders in ASAP".
DON RAMATICI was then called upon and thanked by PRESIDENT JIM for allowing JOHN RAMATICI to take time off to fly the group of dentists to Mexico. Before DON sat down PRES. JIM fined DON $20.00 for being a nice guy.
March Anniversaries: BILL LAWRENCE, RALPH PELTON, HENRY HANSEL, KIP HERZOG, BARNEY FAUSS, and ROY MUSICK. Congratulations to all of you and don't forget to remember your special day in a special way. BABE wants all to get your ticket orders in ASAP!
RALPH SARTORI was then called upon by PRES. JIM and asked about his recent election to the Petaluma Area Chamber of Commerce Board. RALPH said it was a low profile campaign. PRES. JIM offered a $60.00 fine, RALPH countered with $50.00, PRES. JIM came back with $55.00 and after doing farmers math (with the help of BABE) RALPH agreed to $65.00.
The normal raffle then took place, along with several additional items that were provided by our guest speaker. Bill Fusco. The big winners were DAVE AMUNDSEN, DOUG GARRISON, RICH CROCI and GINA PITTLER.
LOU STEINBERG then introduced our speaker Bill Fusco, Director of Athletics for Sonoma State University. Bill gave a very informal talk on the Athletic Department at SSU and filled us in on the history and current status of the Athletic Department. Plans for the future include the auction “Bidnight Madness” on 3-23-02. Go online at BIDnightMadness.com to make your bid. Also don't be surprised if the "Raiders" appear on the local scene again in the future.
Babe wants those ticket orders ASAP!
Place your order with Maureen Joyce 763-3310 or Bill Groverman 763-2772
